Does this automatically mean I'm hopeless?

I'm in college now and is trying to transfer to Caltech next year. Everything is cool except one semester I planned on dropping but for some reason I wasn't dropped.

The professor record shows that I was getting all As for the first month and then I just stopped attending the classes since I planned on dropping the semester. The reason I wanted to drop the semester is because I wasn't sure of my major so I wanted to take a break off and do something else in my spare time.

For some reason the college didn't drop me and I "flunked" all the courses that semester, which killed my GPA.

Other than that, my grades are very good.

Is there anyway I can have my advisor write a note explaining my situation to the admission office?

Do I still have a chance? (assuming everything else is great)

Thanks

go see the registrar and sort it out with them

Yes; go to the registrar or student services offices first, and then go to the professor/chair of your major department if you can't get it fixed there. Did you make an attempt to drop the courses, or just assume that the college would un-register you? If you made an attempt to drop them (dropped them on the computer registration page, but it didn't go through, for example), then the situation should be relatively easy to appeal.

Your post sounds as if you are just trying to make the best of their screwup. If they were supposed to drop you, then find out what happened.
