HERE IS A LIST OF SCHOOLS THAT IM STRONGLY THINKING ABOUT. IVE SEPERATED THEM BY USING THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES: SAFETY, MATCH, LOW REACH, REACH. PLEASE TELL ME IF SOME OF THESE COLLEGE'S SHOULD BE IN A DIFFERENT CATEGORY. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

MATCH
- AMERICAN
- UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI
- COLGATE(ED 2 AND DOUBLE LEGACY)
- SUNY BINGHAMTON (LEGACY)
- SUNY GENESEO
- BOSTON UNIVERSITY
- MUHLENBERG
- OXFORD COLLEGE AT EMORY UNIVERSITY

I know its confusing. Emory is my top choice and i like schools like emory which is why ill be applying ED there. Colgate is where both my parents went to school. They are active alumni and are pushing me hard to go to Colgate. I told my parents that i would defintely consider applying ED 2 to Colgate since it is a really prestigious school. Still, i prefer schools like Emory over Colgate.

Got it. Show a lot of interest in Emory, visit etc and apply ED. You should have a good shot!
What is it about Emory? Look for in other places too?

Location is great. For me, the perfect location would be right outside a city like emory basically is. I want to major in finance. Emory has a great program. Also, i would like to go to a prestigious school which Emory definitely is. Ive heard great things about Emory. I really hope i get in Early Decision and i will make sure to visit it. Other schools that are realistic choices at the top of my list are American, GW, Tulane, and Miami. All the schools on my list i love but Emory is defintely my dream school.

Syoung: i know what your talking about. I basically know i have no chance at any of my reaches except for emory(barely have a chance because of ed). these are schools my parents just want me to apply to just to give it a shot. I hope your not talking about my low reaches or matches because i was hoping i would have a good shot at most of those.

nova2nola: Thank you for the advice. Ill be sure to do that.

I would work on increasing your SAT scores, as that is still within your control. Your CR doesn’t even fall within the middle 50th % for Lehigh, GW, Tulane or Northeastern. (Same for W score in some but I don’t have W scores recorded for all.) Assuming that you are an otherwise unhooked applicant (ignoring the legacy schools), you would want to have your SATs closer to the 75th % than at or below the 25th.

I understand that you are hoping to be accepted at Emory and therefore not need to apply ED II to Colgate, but if Emory does not work out, the legacy tip may not be worth the same as an ED II applicant as it would have been as an ED I. I do not know this to be true but am simply speculating. Good luck! Looks like a very well thought-out list.

The other thing is, your SATs are fine, but they aren’t enough to get you in to Bing or Geneseo. What would tip you in might be something else interesting, like a special EC, but you don’t have that. Have you seen the latest stats for Geneseo? They like kids with lots of honors classes, etc, but by your GPA it doesn’t look like you have many of these. I hate to be a downer but you probably should be realistic. I’m also not sure why you are applying to the schools on your reach list. People who get accepted to those schools have much higher stats. Maybe there is something else you aren’t telling us. I don’t want to be mean, but you are putting yourself out there, and as a parent I think you could use a dose of reality, and can draw up a better list.

What a well thought out list, kudos. Agree you need to work on the SAT for most of these schools, even some of the safeties. OR take the ACT. My sons did exponentially better on the ACTs and it seems many students do better on one or the other. Have you taken it? I would ask your guidance counselor and perhaps give it a try. Most schools don’t require you to report both (but be certain before you take it that’s the case at your schools). Not sending SATs and sending a much higher ACT was the trick for my kids. Good luck!

You might want to expand your list and find more schools that you are likely to be accepted to and that you are interested in. I too am concerned about the high number of reaches. I agree with having some on the list- it doesn’t hurt to try- but over-reaching is risky. The student who loves his/her matches and safety schools is likely to be a happy student no matter how the application process turns out.
One college that comes to mind that you might want to consider applying to is Elon. It has a business school and an active and growing Hillel. It’s not in a city, but the students there can do internships in major cities. It’s been discussed on this thread along with other colleges for a wide range of students:

Other suggestions: James Madison University and College of Charleston.

Thank you for all your suggestions. I would just like to state that i do not think i have any chance at any schools in my reaches except emory ed. Even there, its like a 20 percent chance. The main reason i made this thread is because i was wondering if my low reaches are reachable and if my matches and safties are truly matches and safeties. Thank you again for your input.

I just don’t think your matches can be considered safeties, given what you have told us. Some could be reaches, like Bing and Gen. I think you should revisit your match and safety lists. I am not sure that Syracuse is a safety, either. Best of luck to you!

Honestly, what concerns me is I don’t find a discernible pattern to your list. All I see is a list of random, well-known schools. There might be a pattern, but you haven’t shared it. Exactly what are you looking for in an education? What do you want to study? Which school is set up in a way that will best put you on your own, personal, individual path to success (success how YOU define it). And forget about reaches that your parents want! I say that as a parent.

My d was WL at American with stats much higher than yours (and 2 Ivy acceptances). It was a “safety” - only it wasn’t. You never know. Expand the lower end of your list as suggested above.
