I really want to get into brown, and they sent me things in the mail about their pre-college program and have emailed me about. They had to have found my school email from college board because I didn’t even think about brown before I got something in the mail from them. Now I really want to go there but I’m just not sure if I can get in. I have a 3.6 gpa unweighted and a 4.0 weighted. I’m fully dual enrolled in college at a collegiate high school and I haven’t gotten my SAT or ACT scores back. I just don’t know if them sending me things about their pre college program actually means anything or not. I asked around at my school and no one else said they had gotten anything. I live all the way in Florida so it’s not like I’m anywhere near brown. I was just wondering if this actually means anything and if I have a good chance of getting in.
I’m sorry, but this is common mass mailing of advertisements for their different programs, which is sent to high school kids after they take their SATs and/or ACTs. It doesn’t really mean anything.
Yeah, colleges acquire contact information from testing agencies and send those students who score within a certain range a deluge of regular mail and email about their programs. It can be flattering for a student, but definitely take it with a grain of salt. It’s just advertising, nothing more. But that’s not to say you shouldn’t explore these programs further.
My D got the Brown summer mailing as well and let’s just say that she has a better chance of getting struck by lightning than getting in to Brown. ?
Marketing is marketing. They want you to think they “want” you, and it seems to have worked. The real answer is that they just want you to apply.
Colleges will buy lists of potential students from several sources. The biggest is the College Board. But they also get names from other sources. They do this mainly as a marketing ploy. But also to get more applications from students who otherwise would not have known about Brown.
If you have a true interest in Brown, then don’t let this discourage you from applying.
@murray93 ouch dude
