Does this count as 4 years of a foreign language?

I know that a lot of selective schools require 3-4 years of a foreign language. At my high school, we break the year up into two semesters, where most courses last one semester and AP courses last two semesters. So, I took Spanish 1, 2, 3, and 4 from freshman through junior year. However, I am not signed up for Spanish 5 for my senior year. Does “4 years of a foreign language” literally refer to taking it each year of high school, or is it taking four courses as I did in my case by taking Spanish 1-4. And will colleges look badly upon me for not taking it senior year? I’m a prospective business/finance major to put it into context.

Thanks a lot

It means the equivalency of 4 yrs

Nope very normal in districtsome that allow students to start in middle school.

As long as you get to “level 4”, it counts. Colleges know some kids will finish out a foreign language sequence in less than 4 years.

@VickiSoCal @yonceonhismouth @T26E4 Alright, I had the choice between taking AP Government or Honors Spanish 5 and I chose AP Gov. I can still switch the classes before school start. Should I take AP Gov or spanish 5?

Don’t you have to take Gov to graduate?

I’d ask your HS guidance counselor how language at your HS has been viewed by colleges in past years.

Is Spanish 4 at your high school equivalent to completion of 4th year Spanish at other high schools?
