I am currently a junior who is trying to figure out what to list under the activities section of the Common App. I think I have a general idea of what I will include, but there is one program that I am unsure about:
First semester, I took an entrepreneurship class. We participated in a Junior Achievement Company Program, where we created a legitimate business. We designed, marketed, and sold a product at our school. At the end of the semester, the business was liquidated.
In the company, we were divided into various departments. I was one of two students on the public relations team. My job mostly consisted of communicating with our customers through email, keeping track of online orders, scheduling order pickups, checking with the main office to ensure said pickups were carried out, and composing the letter that was sent out to our shareholders at the end of the program.
I took away a lot from this program. It made me realize that I want to pursue communications and/or public relations as a career. As I will most likely apply to colleges under majors pertaining to those areas, I believe including the above could be a potential benefit.
My main issue is that though the business was the real deal and was in conjunction with an outside program, it was mostly carried out in a classroom. However, several roles in the company, including mine, often had students staying after class or coming in after school to complete their tasks. It should also be noted that the majority of company business was conducted by students, with the teacher explicitly stating that it was our job to run it.
