Does this count as an EC?

Writing a 200,000-word romance novel that's gotten recognition - but on a website. Not, you know, on paper.

Does it? I mean, is it even mentionable if half your application is already dedicated to writing awards and editorial posts and your essay is about reading? If it has taken up over two years of your life?

Depends on what website. Your best friends blog would be a NO!

What kind of recognition has it received?

Sure, it counts as an EC. Put it down and a link to the website. It also sounds like your novel would be a good subject for your essay. Anything productive that takes so much creativity, time and effort would impress colleges.

@bulletandpima, I have to agree. It really does depend on the website. If it’s something that’s fairly “known”, I’d put it and explain why I put it. But, if’s it something like Sue’s Fanfiction Emporium, Stories @ blogspot, etc., I would definitely shy away from putting it. In fact, it might actually hurt you at that point. I met with an admissions counselor from Emory over the weekend and she said when people start putting “superfluous” stuff in their applications like that, she starts flipping through the file, just to make sure she didn’t miss anything that they’re trying to overcompensate for.

The fact that the OP took the time and effort to write a book makes it an impressive EC. The award isn’t as important as is the fact that the OP wrote a book. That certainly reflects passion and creativity.

Perhaps it would be better to mention it in an essay and not in the actual application?

Fine to mention it in the essay and application. Also fine (for the colleges that allow students to send extras) to send a chapter of the book.

I’m not trying to be mean, but writing something that’s book-length is not the same as writing a book…not saying that what you’ve written is inferior [I honestly have no idea], but I’m not sure that quantity is necessarily an indicator of quality.

Northstarmom is definitely the authority on this one.

It doesn’t matter on what website because you can probably get it up on just about any website - it’s the internet for Pete’s sake people!

IMO, if you post up a topic like this asking if something is an EC it probably is because it’s obviously something you put time into and care about.

Some of these posts truly befuddle me. If writing a 200,000 word novel over the course of 2 years is NOT a legitimate EC, but being the president of the oh-so-prestigious NHS is a legitimate EC, then there is something wrong with the system. Which one shows more time, more effort, and actually represents a person’s passion? I’ll leave that one for you guys to figure out.

I’m so impressed by the EC.
