Does this count as an extra-curricular?

I’ve posted a questing similar to this before. I’m one of 9 kids. My mom a few years ago found that she had a tumor in her mouth. It wasn’t cancerous but spread to her ovaries and spine. So for almost 6 years I had to take care of my brothers and sisters. My problem is does this qualify for extra-curriculars? Because I had to take care of my siblings I never got to join a club, play a sport, etc. I’ve voulenteered at a hospital for over 80 hours and I was selected for a summer program. Does all of this sound like it would be acceptable for extra-ciriculars? I’m a junior. Thanks

Yes, absolutely. One of the categories in the common app for extracurriculars is family obligations. You also list the amount of time you dedicate per week on the app. Colleges take this kind of situation is something colleges consider greatly.

Note, however, that you only include the time that you spent doing this in high school. It sounds like you are no longer taking care of your siblings. Have you taken up any extracurriculars since then? Colleges will want to see that you have.

I still am, but I’ve been doing it a lot less because my mom is slowly coming around. Recently she has been able to do a lot more. I still find it hard though to leave her alone since her husband travels for work so for most of the time she is alone unless I’m there. So basically yes, but I have been doing a lot more. I just recently completed 80 hours of voulnteer work at a hospital since I want to become a doctor. So all in all do you think I will have a hard time getting into a great school? I’ve gotten straight A’s, some B’s and I will be taking the SATs soon which honestly I feel very confident about

I think given your circumstances, it will be fine.
