Does this count as tutoring?

Hi
Does it count as tutoring if you helped teach a sibling to play the piano? This is for the activities list in the college application btw.
Thanks

Yes!

@LanaHere Would it look bad to admissions officers if I wrote it though? I mean, surely anyone can just lie and say they tutored their siblings? Thanks!

I guess you can say that anyone can just lie and say they did this and that. But why lie?

“Truth always come to light…”.

Do you think it would really matter, though?

How many hours did you put in? Is it sitting with them every day to practice for 2 years? Then yes.
If it was showing them a few things a couple of times, then no.

I don’t think of helping a sibling as tutoring, especially in a non-academic subject.

If this (tutoring on piano) was a formative experience for you, and could be made into a funny or interesting or revealing vignette for a college essay (showing why you do want to teach or never want to teach) it might find a place in an essay - especially if it reveals something in your character - but it is a stretch that tutoring a sibling could be used (it is “expected” “normal” behavior to aid parents/family so would have to reveal something unique)

… if it’s just going to be a filler line on your “activities” list – it really strikes me as straw grasping unless your teaching was substantial. And yes, everyone could list they “tutored” their siblings on an entire range of things… making yours look like, well,

fluff.

No, tutoring as an extra curricular is when you are not related to the person. This is a nice thing to do, but it can’t really be added to an application - unless you write a compelling essay on it and how it has impacted you
