Alright, so as an upcoming junior, I won't be taking a foreign language class. A little background info: I took Spanish I in 8th grade, Spanish II H in 9th, and Spanish III H in 10th grade. Does this count as three years of a language or two?

I know most selective colleges want at least three years of a foreign language, but I can't take AP Spanish this year because I want to take AP Bio (which is two class periods). Will colleges look down on me for not taking a foreign language junior year?

what you have to realize is that admission officers have a certain amount of time for each application.. and they wont be like ohhhhh this person did this or didnt do that.. just make sure you have the requirements.. 3 foreign lang credits means in highschool..unless you got high school credit for whatever you did in mid school

You're planning on taking it senior year to fulfill the requirement, right? Then your gap junior year shouldn't be a big deal; maybe explain it on your app if there's a good opportunity.

I'm sure you'll be fine. My friend skipped a year of Latin (although she is self-studying it...) for her ridiculous, AP-filled schedule this year. Colleges must understand that schedule conflict exists.

yes, selective colleges will hold it against you. You need to take at least 3 years in high school, not including 8th grade. Most very selective schools expect 4 years.

You'll need to pick that language right back up in senior year, which may be hard. While I doubt it'll make much of a difference if you still make it to Spanish IV in senior year, make sure the reason your skipping it this year is valid. Are you taking a non-necessary elective? While your Film as Lit class or whatever (assuming here, your schedule may be legimately packed) may sound fun, you want to fill out your core requirements first. As a general rule, take a math, english, social studies, science, and foreign language every year. Also make sure your two-period AP Bio is within your realm of interest--if you're not planning to pursue science later in life, you may want to bump down to Honors and go for the AP Spanish.

Ok, thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, all the other classes I'm taking are required for graduation, so I can't drop any classes. I actually plan to major in Bio and follow the pre-med path, so I don't think I'm going to drop AP Bio either. I did receive high school credit for Spanish I, but I didn't actually take it in high school, so I don't know if that counts. I guess the best solution is to take AP Spanish in my senior year? Anymore suggestions?

Does the 8th grade class show up on your high school transcript?

My district lets us take high school classes as early as 7th grade. We sign some sort of form, and it counts as high school credit.

Like when I took Spanish 1 in 7th grade, I had mainly freshmen and sophomores in my class (I went to a jr/sr high school). It was a high school class, but I was allowed to take it in 7th grade.

I took Spanish 1 in 7th grade, Spanish 2 in 8th grade, and Spanish 3 in 9th grade. I stopped after that.

They're all high school credits, so they count towards the "three years of foreign language" recommendation.

This past year, I couldn't fit German IV (my favorite class, and the language I am planning on majoring in) into my schedule. I talked to a teacher, worked out a schedule and I self-studied it the whole year and got credit for it. I did all the German IV work and tests, but I sat in on a German I class, and kind of acted like a TA. The only thing I really missed out on was the field trips and competition, which sucked because I would've freaking loved to compete in German. I also (voluntarily) missed lunch to occasionally sit in on the actual German IV class. =P

Maybe you could talk to the Spanish teacher and see if you could work out self-studying it and getting credit for it. It's possible, and if you have the dedication, you can do it. However, if there's no way for you to sit in on a different Spanish class and hear the language, your going to miss out on developing your hearing and speaking skills.

So, why not see if you can self-study it this year, get credit for it as Independent Study Spanish IV, and then take AP Spanish your senior year? Then you won't miss out on the language for a whole year.

Well, I know that in my school, the foreign lang you take in middle school (7th and 8th grade) counts as one HS credit...So even to get a diploma with honors distinction, in HS you only have to take a foreign lang in 9th and 10th grade...And once through that, you have 3 credits. One from middles school and two from HS.

So, if your school's like mine, you're good.
