Does this make me a legacy student?

I just realized today that my 2nd cousin attended Columbia. Although I've already turned in my app, I was just wondering if that would have put me in the "legacy" category.
Thanks (:

Technically, you are considered a legacy, but your status is not as ‘effective’ as someone who is the child or grandchild of an alumnus or a sibling of someone enrolled.

you are considered in columbia parlance an affiliate - someone with affiliation. which helps in the estimation that you may know more about columbia than someone without any affiliation. i.e. have a stronger affinity, but not significantly.

medio- legacy is actually more narrow: it refers just to a child of someone who attended cc/seas (all of seas included).

Your cousin is an CC/SEAS graduate ? If not, you don’t get legacy status.

I wonder if you can be considered a legacy if your mother went to Barnard before Columbia went coed.

yeah i was wondering the same thing. my cousin is a freshman there now and my mom attended a year there. by the way didn’t the application deadline end already?

@collegeboy49, yes, my cousin attended CC. I want to hit myself for not remembering such a crucial piece of information, however small it may be.

karot - no if your mother went to barnard, you are not considered a legacy. you are once again considered an affiliate.

From Columbia FAQ: We are always pleased to receive applications from students whose family members have graduated from Columbia. When an applicant is extremely competitive and compares favorably with other similarly talented candidates, being the daughter or son of a Columbia University graduate (from any Columbia school or college) may be a slight advantage in the admission process. This advantage may especially apply for “legacy” candidates.

Please note: applicants are considered to be “legacies” of Columbia only if they are the children of Columbia College or the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science graduates.

though it doesn’t mention barnard by name, adcoms mentioned to me this includes barnard - pre and post coed. further though it isn’t mentioned, this does apply to folks who are family members in any way (siblings included). but by laws of propinquity, the closer you are to the person who attended, the more support it offers.

so if you are to rank:
a) child of cc/seas attendee
b) sibling of cc/seas
c) any other affiliates

but overall as it says it offers a SLIGHT advantage. so we are talking about rounding up on a test, not a ten point headstart.

So I’d technically be considered an “affiliate” since my great-grandfather went to CC and the med school? I was just considering it a “minor legacy”.
