Im a transfer student from DeAnza College who applied to UCI, UCSB, and UCLA for Fall 2010 with a 3.6gpa into a Business Economics Major. Even with a pretty decent GPA, I was rejected from all schools. When I called in to find out the reason why, UCSB and UCI told me that I needed to take my English Area 1B class (that means critical thinking English courses) before the fall 2009 quarter. I had no idea such a rule existed and they told me to appeal because I was taking the class during my Spring 2010 quarter. So I finished the class with an A and sent in my appeal letters, but was REJECTED AGAIN because they reached their maximum on transfer students.

I want to know did this happen to anyone else and is this total BS? And to inform next year transfers to take your English classes early -___-

I suspect he didn’t list 1B as planned. Still, it really makes sense to finish your math, English, and major prep courses early. They’re the most important, and even if the school doesn’t automatically reject you for not having them done, it helps to have good grades in those subjects that the adcoms can see.

Look, there are three semesters, plus two summers and maybe winter intersession, before you submit final grades to UC for your application. That’s plenty of time to get those courses taken care of.

ok now I’m kind of worried because probably won’t have English completed until winter or spring depending whether or not I can get in the class.

For most TAGs, you need to have 1B done by the end of Fall. Irvine is an exception: you need to have 1A done by the end of Summer a year before you transfer, but you have until the end of the following Spring to finish 1B.

As for OP’s situation, I suspect he didn’t mark 1B as planned. If he had, he would have been fine at least at Irvine.

1B and 1C are different at different CCCs. At mine, 1B is the second IGETC English class, and 1C is a non-required literature class. It sounds like it’s the opposite at your CCC.

For most TAGs you need the second IGETC English course done by Fall. At Irvine, the first must be done by the previous summer, and the second by Spring the year you transfer.

Yes, it sounds like you’re screwed for most TAGs. I’d try and add 1C in Fall.

yeah it does. from what i read of ppl who got rejected fall 2010, this was fairly common. at least you have an additional year to raise your gpa/get intership etc.

You’re not necessarily “screwed” if you don’t have your English, math, or critical thinking class done by the Fall when you’re applying. However, my counselled realized I was taking my math in the Spring of 10 and told me I should do it this Fall. You get more points on your application. Although, I heard UCSB in particular did not take many people who did not have those three classes done by Fall of 09 for the '10 school year.

What a shame. I cant believe I put off this class until my last semester @ CC. I know not having the English requirements makes me ineligible for TAG, but I hope this doesn’t completely ruin my chances.

You’ve already taken 1A, right? Just add 1C this fall, and drop a less important class if you need to. Find an open online section, maybe.

Professors will say the class is full, but be tenacious. Find a professor who will let you stay in class until the last day to add. Someone else will almost always drop before that date, and you’ll be the only one left waiting for an add code.

Well, I’m on the wait list for a night class. I’ve never been on the wait list before. I feel like such a deviant. Maybe this is for the best since I’ll have such a chill spring semester, assuming I get in the class.

khanh!!! holy asldjaskfafsjk you’re on here too (PM me if you want to know who this is)!! but i’m sorry! but yea, DA never informed us about that rule, totally BS in my opinion…but at the same time, it is a course for TAG. and unless you didn’t do TAG, it’s a little hard for UC’s to accept you (i think).

i think your best bet for now is to apply for SPRING quarter for schools, filing periods are Oct1-31.
but since you’re stuck at DA, go play on the tennis team and talk to ron! i promise it’s a lot of fun. now you probably know who i am now, haha.
