My GC and I were planning out the rest of my classes for high school (generally). For my core classes I will have to take science and math through all for years of high school (I go to a special magnet science and math school) Also my favorite subject is history so I will have been taking it all four year. I will be taking my language all four years, so it will be five years of spanish total, because I heard that really shows commitment for college.

My question is....Is it a good idea to take English all four years (my least favorite class)? Will it make much of a difference? The extra AP English would help but I would really like an elective (like business law and business marketing). Due to the magnet school, I only get one elective and I am using it for Spanish. Any suggestions?

(by the way, I can take another elective but only if I do zero period. That is one class that I take every morning for 45 minutes before school starts)

English is a core subject, most schools will want to see you take it for all 4 years. Check the websites for the colleges you might be interested in and see what they recommend.

4 yrs of english goes beyond recommendation for a lot of colleges…its basically a requirement…

I really believe that doing four years of english would be the most benefical to you as an aspiring college student. For, being able to write in a clear and concise way is the best means of communicating a message. Whether this be for a college essay or the SAT writing section. Four years of english will only help you in the long run!

I’ve never heard of a school requiring less than 4 years of English.

Ok thank you for the advice. I think I will stay in English because of what is mentioned above, and other reasons.

DougBetsy - because of me being in the magnet school I am allowed to drop english in 12th grade to have an elective.

Sound advice from the residents of CC as usual. Anything less than 4 years of English will set off alarm bells in most college admissions offices.

ReachforDreams - That’s good news about your option for electives. But, be careful. Just because your high school allows less than 4 years, doesn’t mean a college will. I see it’s moot now; you’ve decided to take English. Good decision.

Yes English is really important. Make sure you take for atleast 4 years. Most competitve unis will expect it from you. Gl.

Take the 4th year of English AND take one of the electives you mentioned utilizing the zero hour option. Going above and beyond is impressive to admissions officials.

ok, that’s again for your imput
I didn’t know that English class was so important senior year!

I have one more question. Which one is better? AP English Lit or AP English Lang?
