Does this mean I get free money...

(Even though the title seems misleading, it really isn't)

Here is the approximate cost of and OOS dependent at UNCCH.

Tuition $18,104
Fees $1,578
Room $4,600
Board $2,866
Books/Supplies $1,000
Travel $1,100
Personal $1,200

Total $34,480

However, with the financial aid and all individual scholarships, I have amassed approximately 35,400. I have a couple of questions though: I know that all the estimates given are just that, estimates. For example, if I don't spend as much money on travel or personal, will I be given the sums I save there to apply for better housing or do I have to fall within the parameters that the financial aid limits?

Secondly, do we have to stay on campus housing if the UNCCH office is willing to pay for room or board. I am interested in Granville Apartments but don't know if the aid that the University provides covers housing off campus. Does it?

Thank you in advance and I hope proves very informative to you just as it will to me.

If UNC says they will give a set amount of money for housing then they will deposit that amount into you student account. What will happen is all the money they give you will go into covering all of your student fee charges. I forget when, but somewhere near the middle or so of the semester, or maybe earlier i don't remember, you will get either a check or a direct deposti into your bacnk account whatever extra money you have in you student account.

UNC gives me money to help me pay for tuition, but I have a scholarship that covers all my tution so whatever they gava me just went into paying the overall charges I had. In fact, my freshman year I made about $700 because I had more scholarship money then I needed. haha but just saved that money and used it my sophmore year because I had a little bit of a harder time getting scholarship money for the 2nd year.

If you are an OOS student I would look at the UNC dorms as well because once outside the system you virtually can't get back in. Granville has many in state kids who already know each other as well as those who intend to go Greek (there are certainly many who live in dorms that go Greek as well) and although it sounds attractive it is very far from where most freshman will be living. Just my two cents.
