So, I was just checking my mail, as is routine, and saw this:

"For the past four years you've studied hard, volunteered in your community and
filled your time with extracurricular activities. We want to give credit where
credit is due.

Each year, the UCLA Alumni Association offers 250 merit-based scholarships of
$4,000 to $12,000 to entering UCLA freshmen who have demonstrated leadership in
extracurricular activities, community service and employment. Scholarship
recipients may also be eligible for need-based grants of up to $5,000.

The scholarships are paid out over four years and require a combination of 30
hours of service annually to UCLA and the Alumni Association for the second-,
third- and fourth-year payments."

There's more too.. but, does that mean anything? Or do all applicants get this?

atreeyum, im actually making presentations at local high schools about the alumni scholarships. i cant say for sure if it means anything, because it is way too early for admissions to be finished at ucla. however, because the alumni association's scholarships are separate from ucla itself, your application or your name must've been forwarded by the admissions office to the alumni association. nevertheless, i dont know if its supposed to mean anything or not (i just make presentations to all the seniors who applied to ucla).

in any case, i do recommend that you apply for the alumni scholarship because a lot of benefits come along with it. if you have further questions, just post a reply.

Hm, got that in my e-mail, but I also got something like this from Berkeley, and lots of kids over in the Berkeley forum received the same alumni scholarship email...

Unfortunately, like the Cal Alumni invitation email, it means nothing about the admission process or your chances of getting the scholarship (I think it should state it also towards the bottom of the email that it has nothing to do with whether or not you got accepted to the school). It's just a general email that everyone who applied to UCLA should receive if they put down a legitimate email in their application. If you for some reason did not receive the email, you can still apply and the link can be found at:

You need to print out the application and mail it in because UCLA will not allow you to fill it out online (you also need teacher recommendations).

You should really apply because the monetary award for UCLA alumni scholarship is really nice and the application process is not all that bad (not quite sure about the other perks, perhaps some early enrollment units, but the money itself is enough incentive). Best of luck to you!

do note that the application is just the preliminary round. to actually get a scholarship, you'll have to go through a regional interview (they will invite you to this upon reviewing your app). usually, top 3 in the region get $4000. top 2 advance to something called "state finals" where you compete against all the top students from CA. scholarships are bigger here, going up to $12,000. so, hopefully ill see one of you during state finals ;)

only top 3 hm? how big are regions? i'm kind of bummed because the 2 weekends for the interviews are the same 2 weekends as I'm in the Sound of Music... so I'd have to miss a performance or two if they invite me to interview. golly being financially strapped makes college choice more like a mandate by the parents to whichever is cheaper! i almost don't want to apply for the scholarship so they won't offer me the money so my parent's would let me go to a private school that offers a lot of finaid. UCLA was my top choice school for years, until i found out that you can't get into the film program til junior year. sucks!

I got the email too, and I had a quick question about the essays. Does anyone know if it's okay to repeat a little of what we said in the original UC application? Or are both applications looked at together? Because I wrote a little about leadership in one of my admissions essays.

Also, I got the email for the minority scholarship. Is it okay to apply if i'm only 1/4 Salvadorian? There's nowhere to mark what percentage of a race you are, and I would feel dishonest implying that I'm full Latina.

well 1/4 was the requirement to be a national hispanic scholar so i figure it's probably okay for this too. they'll find out at the interview anyway, i think there's interviews for that one too
