I am doing practice SAT questions and I found this one problem which I think has no answer even though the blue book says it does.

Scientists predict technological changes in the next [century, they will be as dramatic as was] the development of the transcontinental railroad in the last century.

A. same
B. century, these will be as dramatic as
C. century; being as dramatic as was
D. century will be dramatic as is
E. century as dramatic as

The answer is E. Can someone explain to me why this is so?

CHANGES (pause) in the next century (pause) AS DRAMATIC AS THE DEVELOPMENT OF...CENTURY.

read it out loud like that and it will make sense. They are referring to the changes as dramatic as the development..but they throw the time frame in the middle of the sentence. Look at the other choices:

A. forms an independent clause, but a dependent clause at the end, attached with no article! Oh the cruelty!

B. way too wordy. might as well be choice A because it doesn't make it any better. The sentence should be joined with a semi colon. Gah.

C. Oh NOW they put the semi colon. Hmph! Well, too bad it's grammatically incorrect. If you use this choice, the second half will be a fragment.

D. Now this is just a run-on sentence. Weird.

E. The best choice, and it makes sense once you say it quickly out loud.

Hope that helps.

E, is correct because you just have to say it quickly outloud as the previous post said.

But what I am to do during the actual test? I can't say it out loud. Any suggestions?

uh, do you have a strong background in grammar? If not, get one. With the practice tests, you can say them out loud, and by the time the actual test rolls around, you'll get so used to it that you won't have to say em aloud. You're just a freshman. Plenty of time, unless you want to get the SAT over with...but that's providing that you have firm ground with the material.

hah i'm imagining some slow person saying the sentences out loud. Good humor.
