does this show comittment or not. that's the question

my older friend that already applied to stanford ucla and among other colleges asked me if his tutoring (french) seems like he was passionate about (?) Well, he told me he started in 2nd semester of sophomore year and continued nonstop till he applied to colleges. He also, every week, about 3 hrs a week, he would enjoy french cuisine, cooking various french food. he also took some french classes in community colleges. Then he told me French was not his major, though. but he told me that he had a huge passion on everything french - food, language, etc. Since he lived in france for about 12 years and then came to the US few years ago... He's just pretty worried.

I told him it was very nice, but how might adcoms look at this? shows committment and passion.?

BTW, he asked me this since he is worried that this is his only EC he got - cooking french cuisine and teaching french to elementary kids but he reassured that he spent lots of time for each activity.

parents, any opinions?

It sounds great to me & will probably strike a chord with at least some adcoms. The truth is it's tough to KNOW what each school is looking for (particularly at the most selective colleges), but it really does sound like he's done some interesting things that will get a good look by the adcoms.

thank you HImom. yeah, he's bit worried and i should definitely acomodate him by telling him what he has done is great! His first choice is stanford and he loves it.

With Stanford & similar schools, it's really tough to know which students will be "chosen" to attend. Hey, they even reject validictorians! Tell him that it's a good idea to love his safeties, just like everyone else, so he has many schools he could be happy at (he could always transfer into his dream school if it comes to that or go to grad school there).

yeah, and that is pretty impressive. but sometimes it can be b/c some vals are too concerned about grades and scores, and not other things. but my friend is not too concerned about grades. His grades are just above average, not extremely good. took 4 or 5 APs in junior year and dunno how mnay right now. Still, im proud that instead of going grades grades scores scores, he devoted much of his time cooking and teaching and i truly admire him

i am on the way to do it like him too, because what he does is exactly what I planned to do few months ago.. yeah what a coincidence. Slightly different in that it will not be french cooking and teaching.

any other opinions, parents?
