I've been looking through ''Chance me'' posts and every time people have SUPER amazing stats like 4.0/5.0 gpa, 35 ACT, 2350 SAT, 15 AP and IB, a bunch of EC's and research, varsity sports, national awards, letters of rec from professors at college they wish to attend, etc. And most of these are asking for chances into schools like Emory, tufts, vanderbilt, smith, pepperdine, oxy, etc. which obviously they'll get accepted to. This makes me super depressed because when I look through the actual stats on sites like college data i think i have a chance...but then I come here and see these posts and think ''If they had to choose between me and all these other candidates I'd be on the bottom of the list.'' Anyone else feel this way?

It used to bother me more than it does now. But I’ve done well in high school and I’ll be going to a good college and getting a degree the same as people with better “stats” than me. We’ll probably end up with the same jobs.

For the most part, people with bad stats aren’t going to be posting them on the Internet. And a lot of people post their “projected” stats anyway, which basically means they’re lying.

That indicates privilege more than merit.

Most of the schools you listed aren’t anyone’s safety.

the CC users are probably only the top 1% of applicants, and CC acceptance rates at selective colleges are definitely much higher (we have to get a database going with CC acceptance rates at colleges with a comparison of stats and everything)

This website represents some of the highest achieving students aiming for the best schools in the world. Such a small percentage of college-bound students will end up at the schools most people strive for on here (being the ivies and some change). The financial aid forums and the individual school forums are, in my opinion, the most insightful parts of this website.

Chance threads, especially on College Confidential, are just places where people who know little about how admissions officers think try to gauge the strength of people who lie about their grades. Don’t worry about it: forget what the chance threads say, and be happy with your life.

Personally I’ve never understood the “chancing” except perhaps as a way of showing how “humble” you are. I have found some valuable information in several of these forums, but I’ve also had to ignore posters who consider the school my daughter chose to be at best “average” and who show disdain for schools that many others would see as a dream come true. It is truly amazing when people post things like a 29 on the ACT being low. I live in an area where the majority of students don’t even go on to college, much less gain acceptance to Ivies. Your day-to-day environment does shape perception, and those in areas with strong public schools, or at elite private schools, have a very different perception from many others.
