My grade has 418 students, so top 10 would be 41.8. However, my rank is 42. Would this still count as top ten percent or would top 10 percent cut off at 41?
I imagine it depends on the school and also the context. I can tell you that my son was in the same situation (#50/498). His first choice school, offers merit scholarships, based on GPA and class rank, and all information (from both the school and other students and parents) was that the school was very firm on requiring top 10% for the largest merit award. He has been offered been offered that award (his gpa was quite high and his ACT scores were above the requirement) so either they considered him in the top 10% or thought he was close enough.
