Does this student have a shot?

This young lady has a 3.1 GPA from an above average but not top 15 LAC, a 3.4 pre med course GPA, a 29 MCAT and no research. Will any med school admit her? Will a masters help? If yes, what kind and what schools would she have a shot at for this degree.

Rr, here’s a recent thread that is related to your question:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/pre-med-topics/925195-what-gpa-considered-good-medical-school-admissions.html

Very helpful, thank you. So I’m assuming no MCAT score would save her at this point?

Any advice on whether a masters is worth a try?

No, a masters degree will not help her.

If she is URM, she might have a shot. Also, there are DO schools.

Would a DO school give her more options than a foreign med school? How would we find DO schools that would accept her?

Research their stats, apply to them, I am not familiar with them, but stats are somewhat lower. I woud not consider foreign med schools.

Gosh, yes. A DO school would give her many options. I’d apply to my in-state lower stat MD schools and a bunch of DO schools. Those aren’t horrible stats for DO.

A quick google shows those stats to be very competitive for good DO programs. Unlike MD schools where quality is more consistent, IMO you need to wary of lesser DO schools. Quality at the top is quite good but as you drop …you fall off a cliff.

I find myself more optimistic than some posters here about the possibility of MD admissions. The right candidate with those stats may very well succeed in admissions in our state (TX) .

Go DO. Consider retaking classes because DO schools replace the grade.

How do you determine which are “lesser DO schools”? How do you know which are the best for future opportunities? Is it based on their stats for incoming class? Or how long they have been around? How should these be best researched?

“Lesser DO schools” was loose language on my part. Sorry. I just meant that some DO schools appear to have a less than great reputation.

I think her stats are too low for DO schools as well, but it’s worth a shot.

A 29 MCAT is a good score for DO. If the overall GPA is 3.1 that is low for DO schools. I don’t know what the OP meant by “pre-med course” GPA but if it meant something similar to Biology, Math, Chemistry, Physics then that 3.4 isn’t too bad. Here’s an sdn link.
I know very little about the process specific to DO schools so I’ll stop here. The links on sdn should provide some data directly from the schools themselves.

Somebody’s D. here got into Med. School with 29, but her GPA was higher. I would say that girl has a shot at DO and her science GPA is not too bad either.
