I asked our student--he basically said the same thing as shellzie. I think it was at least mid-July, 2 years ago. Perhaps this is an area that needs improvement, but then again, this is the way it has pretty much always been done based on our inquiries to alums. But, who knows, they may get around to changing the way housing is set up (room assignments, roommates, etc.) since they have already made the change to common app for admissions in the coming year(s). You know, I have to wonder if they don't hand out assignments too far in advance because they really don't want to have to deal with too many complaints ahead of time. If one already begins to know the roommate before they even arrive on campus only to discover there are issues, then how much damage control can they do to accommodate freshman? (no offense freshman, but there are only so many dorms and rooms available!) Son's principal from elem school was a lot like this--she would post the class lists only a few days before school started. I think she did not want to have to deal with moving students around because of dislike for teachers or other students. The lists were posted and they were pretty much written in stone. Perhaps ND will get around to re-evaluating the whole process, but it won't be this year!

I am a rising junior at the school and while I agree it's a bit annoying to have to wait so long, the bigger issue here is the incompetence of the bureaucracy that is the ORLH. They are an impenetrable force and a detriment to the overally experience of the University. I just think it's a disconnect and no one there really has any incentive to bring things up to normal operating standards. I mean, little annoyances like this and other things I have seen won't prevent you from COMING to ND, so nothing really keeps them in check.

How is this or anything else you have mentioned an annoyance? Like seriously you have a full month to get everything settled with your roommates, is that not enough time? Seriously do you guys want like a year or so to plan everything? Sorry for sounding so harsh but this is nothing compared to what transfer have to go through, and all the trouble I have gone through for that has been a privilage. I mean I get to go to Notre Dame for gods sake! I say get a summer job and worry about something else other than complaing about when you recieve your roommates number.

I think the real reason why any of us are complaining is due to the frustration of our own excitement. I think I can safely say because of the way Notre Dame sets up housing, we are all very excited to find information that at any college might not hold as much weight. The vast majority of students here stay in the dorm they are placed in for at least 3 years, if not 4. There is a lot of dorm spirit that just does not exist at other schools. How many dorms at other schools you know have mascots? How many schools do people actually celebrate their dorm's history and the tradition it has had for over 100 years? At other schools the dorm room is nothing more than a box you share with someone you just met. Here, it means something.

I absolutely agree with KSAzN. My friends that have been waiting for public school are more worried about getting ones with facilities than anything else. No spirit behind their dorms.

We're waiting for who our families will be at ND.

At least you guys are guaranteed a dorm :(.... oo well, I guess I cant complain if I dont get one lol

Another random note. A couple people have mentioned how they wish ND had forms to fill out to match roommates to each other. That was one of the things I was most worried about when I was waiting for my decision. All of my other friends had filled out surveys, whereas the only question ND asks is "do you want housing? (hint for freshmen: the answer is yes)." However, it ends up working out just fine for most people. In fact, my freshman year roommate is now one of my best friends at ND and we're planning on rooming together for a third year in the fall. In fact, I know of a lot more people who had roommate problems sophomore year when they chose their own roommates than with their randomly assigned freshman year roomies. Also, don't worry about what dorm you get put into. Pretty much everyone ends up loving their dorm.

Then again, sometimes you and your freshman roommate hate each other. I won't go into specifics, but my situation was basically as bad as it got for me.

But, regardless, the random rooming ensures you don't just room with someone exactly like you. It really teaches you how to deal with people and situations.

^^^^^^ EXACTLY!!!!!! Is that not what we are going to college to learn?

CCG, why aren't you guaranteed a dorm?

Transfers are not guaranteed a dorm, although the school does try their best to get transfers into dorms. After all freshman are assigned rooms they see what they have left over and try to fit us Transfers/readmitted/upperclass man looking to move back into dorms. They have a housing lotto to determine the order, and although I placed pretty good and have a good chance of recieving a dorm, I still will not find out where I will or am assigned until, maybe, mid august.

We got room assignments today!

I'm in the Manor with one roomate.

Sweet I like the manor since day one, but I hear the rooms are really small.

Thanks, I have heard nothing yet.

nweido just doesn't know any better yet.
