So Yale launched a new program in astrophysics - http://yspa.yale.edu/ - and I would love to attend it. I’m super interested in astronomy and the like, so I’ll definitely apply.
They’re only accepting 28 applicants, so I guess it depends on how many people apply. Does it sound super competitive?
If it interests you, apply regardless if it’s super competitive or not! I’d also recommend looking at SSP… It’s essentially the same thing but with less residential time and pure research. The person running this new program actually was an academic director from SSP a few years ago :P…
Aw what?!?! Why did I never know about this, I want to study astrophysics! Too bad I’m already a senior, I can’t apply :(( anyway, I agree, you should just go for it. It won’t hurt (other than the time it takes to apply) and you could actually get in!
Don’t waste your money on pre-college programs at colleges, even Ivies. They aren’t taught by professors 9 out of 10 times, and they’re basically expensive summer camps for rich East Coasters. Try to intern at a college near you and get some real-world experience, or if your heart is set on a program, I second SSR. Best of luck!
@strivingforanivy, I know some of the people starting up this program at Yale. YSPA is being taught by an astronomy prof., and I know the TAs will be Yale students. It’s going to be similar to SSP in a lot of ways.
