Preparing for results and wanted to know if Tisch waitlists. Overall the waitlist for NYU seems fairly optimistic (in comparison to others) but not sure if Tisch participates in the process or it is a yes/no decision…

I believe that Tisch has a wait list. Keep in mind, however, that they accept more students than they expect to yield and so “extras” are built into the list of acceptances.

My son was just waitlisted at NYU. Does anyone have any experience with what his chances may be? The letter says they can give him a decision between May 1st and June 4th.

There definitely is a chance. I know of two people in my studio who were waitlisted, there may have been more I just haven’t really asked people about it.

D was waitlisted for Tisch as a dance major. Not sure if she will decide to stay on list or just move on to accept another offer.

purple, it’s hard to say what the chances might be to get off the waitlist. Did they give him any idea how many have been waitlisted? As Susan pointed out, traditionally Tisch has made offers to approximately 500 applicants in order to fill approximately 300 spots for the seven studios. So, in order to get to the waitlist, they first have to see how many of that 500 accept their offers. One thing working in your favor, though, is that many of the kids who apply each year to Tisch have no realistic chance of being able to afford to attend. As the cost of attendance has increased to ~$60,000/yr., that is probably even more of an issue now. I know that when my D was there, no one in her studio got in off the waitlist but, from what I’ve heard, it does happen at other studios. It might be worth a call to Tisch to inquire about the number and also how it will affect studio choice.

I agree that nobody here could tell you the chances of getting off the wait list. First, it depends how many students Tisch yields from the offers they made. They only need to go to the wait list if they do not yield their desired number (which I think is about 300). What you can do is ask how many were on the wait list last year and how many offers were made to those on the wait list last year. That will give you some idea but it has its limitations as this can vary year to year depending on the yield. In my D’s year, five years ago, for her studio, CAP21, more students accepted the offer of admissions than their targeted yield amount (they were trying for 64 and put out 80 offers but the majority of the 80 decided to enroll). So, they did not go to the wait list for MT that year, and in fact, had too many students than desired.

I am going to be applying to schools next year and had a wait list question. What if your on the wait list to a school that you would love to attend and can do it financially and have acceptances to other schools but you like the wait list better…do you commit to the other school and plan on going there and if you get offthe wait list be very happy or what?!

Yes, you have to put down a deposit on a school by May 1st and you can also accept a waitlist offer. If you do get in after May 1st from a waitlist, you will forfeit your deposit at your first school.
