Does Tulane Superscore ACT's

Hi, does anyone know if Tulane superscores ACT's?

I think the answer is no, but I am definitely not sure. I suggest you send a quick e-mail to admissions asking exactly that question and let us know what they say.

the answer for this year is definitely No. D got a 34 on a section, and superscoring would have been great for me, I asked, they said no.

Strange… my D1 just finished her freshman year at Tulane. After I posted my question I looked at my old emails and I had emailed Tulane advising the same question 2 years ago. They said Yes they did superscore ACT’s. I wonder if it has changed. I will email them again and report back. By the way, D1 ended up submitting SAT’s not ACT’s anyway.

You know, I think I remember something like they don’t superscore when it comes to scholarship considerations, but maybe they do for admitting purposes. Just not sure, hopefully you can get the full picture.

Ok, here’s the scoop direct from Tulane:

“In response to your question, we actually do not superscore the ACT. We do, however, superscore the SAT. Either test is perfectly acceptable to take and although we do not superscore the ACT, we do consider all test scores submitted. Please let us know if you have any further questions!”

My D’s ACT’s were
APR JUNE
Reading 28 26
Math 27 30
Science 22 29
Writing 31 32

June is better except for the Reading. Should I send in both?
Her SAT is 1950 (640 CR 640 Math 670 WR) which is just slightly lower than her ACT’s

What would you do? Thanks!

Send June and SAT…IMO

I agree with rodney. No real benefit to the April ACT, the slight difference in the reading score isn’t worth it. What was the composite score?

SAT is a wash. You could send, but it won’t help or hurt compared to the ACT I don’t think.

Hi, the June composite was 29. I may suggeset that she try taking them again in September but not sure she will be willing (or if she will improve).

If she preps, and can squeeze it up to 30, that would be nice of course. Puts her more solidly in the middle of Tulane’s ACT range. But I wouldn’t obsess over it. If the rest of her app is strong, those are good scores.

No super-score? Bummer. Here’s our situation.

DS got a 31 composite in April, 30 composite in June. However in science (which he hadn’t previously studied because it is usually his strongest suit), he went from a 30 up to a 35. So his superscore is actually a 32. He was really focusing on getting his reading/English up in April and did that (so that 31 is up from a 29 in December). Note that in December, he actually got a 31 in science.

I was planning on sending both the April and June ACT scores (as well as two SATII in science that were 750 - chem/phys).

He’s aiming for engineering, so that 35 in science in June (to go with the 34 in math in April) is key, I think. As is the amount of merit aid.

His SAT superscore for CR/M is 1310 (730M/580CR). Do you think I need to send them 4 test scores (2 ACT, 2 SAT)? Our goal is acceptance plus maximum merit aid.

Please don’t suggest more testing. He is cooked.

Too late to edit above post, but upon further examination of DS ACT scores, his highest were:

Math - 34 (April)
Reading -30 (April)
Science - 35 (June)
English - 30 (June)

That’s .25 away from a 33!

I think we should send both sets of ACTS and skip the SAT. Even the 30 ACT is higher on the SAT conversion. Then keep our fingers crossed on merit aid.

fallenchemist, what do you think?

Not Fallenchemist, but I’ll chime in.

I agree that you should send both ACTs. It doesn’t really make sense to send the SATs and that’s just going to cost you more money. FWIW, I had two ACTs (31 and 29 composite) and an SAT that was a little bit lower just like your son and I sent both my ACT scores (and received some nice merit too).

jph: Thank you. All feedback welcome! That was the plan for the schools that superscore… what am I going to do? Save $10 and not send them both? (not sure what the cost is now - haven’t had to do this since 2009 for my older DD)

I agree with jph. The SAT really does nothing positive for him, just send both ACTs. Even though they do not superscore, I would have to believe they would notice the much higher science score on the one test. Beyond that, by applying EA (or better SCEA if that doesn’t hurt him at other schools), focusing on his reasons for wanting to attend Tulane, going to at least one local event, and hopefully visiting the campus in the fall he will maximize his chances for early admission and a good merit package.

It is a bit maddening to have such good combined results rather than one spectacular test, I am sure. But his scores are really very strong and if he does those things I mention, getting in shouldn’t be an issue. Merit is much harder to predict of course.

Just to clarify one thing, it really doesn’t matter at Tulane that he plans on engineering as it relates to his science/math scores in as far as admittance goes. Tulane doesn’t admit separately to the engineering school, they admit everyone to Newcomb-Tulane College and everyone picks their majors (and thus their schools) as they wish. So even someone with poor math scores could choose to be an engineering major. It would probably be a foolish decision that would no doubt be discouraged by an advisor, and they might not survive it, but at Tulane they are free to make that choice. I doubt that actually happens much, just making a point.

I’d definitely send the ACTs that show the higher English score. Even if they don’t superscore, his upward trend, combined with the SAT 2s, are helpful. Good luck!

Just to clarify… I was asking abut my DD2 (daughter not son). Also do you think that it helps at all that my DD1 is a rising sophomore at Tulane and did extremley well her fresman year and that she knows the local admission counselor VERY well and I got to know her fairly well during the admission/scholarship proocess for DD1?

I think that absolutely has to help at some level. Hard to quantify of course, but there is always a “halo effect” in situations like this.

Here’s an update on this question, which was asked of Tulane admissions rep at a local admissions event just this week. They now super-score the ACT, as well as the SAT. I was very happy to hear that!

Not to make trouble (lol) but the admissions person at the session where I was helping out said it was only the SAT still. I’ll go ask Owen to track down the correct answer.
