Does tutoring a family member (cousin) count as an EC?

I tutor 3 of my cousins.
One of which is going to be a freshmen in in hgih school and Ive tutored her since she was in 6th grade, helping her with her homework and such.
Another one is 8 and is in 3rd grade, Ive tutored her since she was in 1st grade.
I am also helping my cousin (9 years old) to learn to speak and read english. Shes an immigrant from mexico, so i dont know that would be helpful or not.
Do these count as EC's?

don't be anorexic :(

probably....

Perhaps you can list them under Volunteer or Community Service Activities?
You'll probably need to write down around how many hours each week, and weeks of each year, you spent altogether on tutoring.

I think I'd call it "Tutoring/Homework Help" since there's a dfference between what you did and a professional tutor in a h.s. subject. I always believe in being a bit modest and show you understand the difference between what you did and what a paid, professional, adult tutor does. I really believe in "no padding" since the people who read these can spot it and it can hurt you to puff things up. If you put "Homework Help" somewhere in there, it shows you understand the difference and actually makes you look smarter than just writing "tutor."

even for teaching english?

about that comment that I just posted, I was referring to what
paying3tuitions said, meaning, If I count teaching english under homework help.

It makes other people with strong EC that much stronger if all you got is helping young cousins with English and homework. It's not verifiable so even you had spent the hours it wont help you much.

Not a good one...It is a pretty weak EC. I wouldn't put it down but I am sure you can.

ohhh ok.
Its not the only one, jus tthought I could get the sentimental points. haha.

Aren't you expected to do that? Right your essay about it, but say peer tutoring on ECs.

put it down as volunteering

Abe,

Tutoring a family member whether it is a sibling, cousin grandparent etc. is not an EC. I even think it would be a slippery slope to say that it was "homework help" as I would consider it just being a good family member because that is what family members do- help each other out.

However, this does not mean that you can not talk about it or let the colleges know. If you meet with your GC, or if you fill out brag sheets in order to write your recommendation, I would but it there then the GC could write about it in their recommendation to show who you are outside of the classroom (if you were my student, this is how I would handle it).

If you are using the common app, you experience teaching your family members english could be the topic of your short (essay depending on how you write it).

good luck

What if you've actually tutored a friend and gotten payed for that?
