I’m curious, because my school only has 77 students, which makes it very difficult to place in the top 8%. I would like to know if they look at that when evaluating one’s rank. Thanks!
EDIT: Bonus question, does anyone know if History is a competitive major? That’s what I applied to. I didn’t apply because I thought it would be easy to get into. I genuinely care about the subject, but I am curious as to whether or not it is competitive.
I don’t know the answer to this and I have not seen it answered before.
You might ask your regional admissions rep.
Especially if you are in a rural community or other underrepresented area of Texas, I would think so, although you would come through as a review admit and might not hear until late February.
Thanks for your feedback. I’ll actually go ahead and do that, and then post my answer on here just in case anyone else was curious. I
Thanks!
It’s difficult to be in the top 8% of any class, large or small. Larger classes are generally more competitive and many students have high GPAs, making the competition just as fierce as a small class. I believe UT uses a school profile for each high school which provides information about the strength of their academic curriculum. Consider yourself lucky that auto-admission for the high school Class of 2016 only requires top 8%, not 7% like last year and next year.
History is a major within the College of Liberal Arts. I think COLA is generally a little easier to get into than Engineering, Business, Nursing and Computer Science. I suspect that may be because some of UT’s most qualified candidates (i.e. super smart in math and science) tend to choose math and science-based majors like Engineering and Business.
I went ahead and emailed a representative, and they said they take into consideration the fact that a smaller class size tends to how people rank.
I asked about my major because I’ve excelled in all of my extracurriculars, and my SAT score is pretty good. I experienced some hardship at home that distracted me from my courses. I feel like I would have performed significantly better had it not been for that, which is why I’m especially grateful for essay S. Thanks again guys, and wish me luck!
