Does UC accept online courses from Athabasca University?

The university is a Canadian distance-learning (mostly online), open university that is accredited in the US by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. I am an international student enrolled at Athabasca U who is considering transferring to a UC campus after 60 credits. I have found that many American colleges do not accept online courses from any institution, no matter if the institution is accredited. Is this the case with the UCs too? Or is it that the UCs accept some online courses but not others (specifically foreign language and lab science courses)?

The difference comes down to accreditation, UC’s are regionally accredited while most online universities are nationally accredited, do you know which your school is? The only online classes I took that would transfer were the basic general ed stuff like English and Psych, and even then the catalogue description of the class must be similar to the catalogue description the UC has, so you can see that its difficult to transfer online units, to a UC or any regionally accredited school.

This is always a complex issue with many variables. Since the school is regionally accredited, the units you’ve earned at Athabasca University have a chance of being accepted by a UC. Essentially if the UC has a similar course to the one you’ve taken at Athabasca U the units will transfer. The best bet is to ask a UC counselor because the issue of the transferability of units can get pretty messy.

I attended a vocational music school that is NOT regionally accredited and then went to community college. After much worry I went ahead and asked a couple of UC counselors and they said the units I received at the music school would not transfer and I would not receive credit for them because the school is not regionally accredited.

Thank you for your answers!

Up to now, the only courses I’ve taken are basic, introductory surveys, so there’s a fairly high likelihood that they could transfer. I think I will not take unusual courses at my university like “Native American Literature in Canada”, because there’s a high likelihood that they don’t have equivalents at the UCs.

How do I contact a UC counselor? I am not in the US; can I contact one online?

If I apply to UC Berkeley and UCLA with 60 credits but one or two of my courses (3-6 credits) do not transfer, will I be totally rejected from those schools because they accept only transfer students of junior standing?

You wouldn’t be rejected. You have until the Spring term before you transfer to finish your 60 units. Finish your math and English courses before or during the Fall though. UCs are really strict on that now.
