Does UC Davis read essays?

Do they read our personal statements?
And what about if I'm applying through a TAG? is my statement factored in?

Supposedly they do not, except for scholarship potential, but frankly I have read so many contradictory comments on various UC pages, I cannot say for certain anymore.

Re TAG, all they do is see if you qualify for guaranteed admittance, so they don’t care about the PS and will not look.

@lindyk8 Thanks for the reply. That’s what I’ve been confused about. The UC Matrix specifically said that Davis does not read the personal statements. But since they revised the Matrix, it’s not indicated anywhere.

Thanks for the answer about the TAG personal statement. Do we have to submit the same personal statement for the UC general admissions application?

You do not submit a personal statement with TAG. They merely want to see grades (for the most part).

Sorry if previous post was confusing. As I recall they ask personal, ethnicity, financial (optional), high school,/colleges attended, major, and then your classes. They have a box if you have something to explain, such as a gap year, etc.

Oh my… I was misinformed. I have been working on my personal statement for the TAG. I was told that once I file the tag it will ask for my personal statement. Thank You

You will need a personal statement if you do TAG, because you will have to submit a regular application as well. However, the personal statement is not a factor for TAG. If you have the grades and proper classes, you’re in. So do it, but don’t worry too much about making it perfect (unless you’re applying to other schools).

@Music1990 But my understanding is that the TAG application and the regular application are submitted on separate dates so I will have time to improve my essays. Is that correct?

TAG does not require an essay. They only ask if you have had any gaps in your education.

The two essays are due with the application in November.

Well TAG itself doesn’t require the essays, but doing TAG means you still have to do the regular application, which does require essays. So if you’re doing TAG, fill out those forms when they’re due, then do the regular application as well when it is due. Get it?

The essays are only part of the Nov application. I got what @music1990 was saying earlier but I knew it would confuse you! (Music’s trying out the UCB English dept analysis approach. lol…)

@lindyk8‌

haha get out of here.

this question has like the simplest answer, but for some reason it’s difficult to express I guess. bottom line, OP go see your counselor. case closed.
