D is from out-of-state, and applied Early Action to DAAP. We're slowing educating ourselves as to how UC works. Our questions boil down to:

Early Action deadline is 12/1. D's application materials should all be there as of 11/1. When is the earliest that she would be notified about acceptance?

Is the acceptance general to the university, or specific to the major (Applying for DAAP, Interior Design)?

Are any scholarships offered at the outset, or must the FAFSA be filed first after Jan. 1st for any offers to be made? (And do they tell her what to apply for?)

D's stats:
SAT Math: 720
SAT Crit. R: 590
SAT Writing:710
Unweighted GPA: 3.8

7 honors courses, 1 AP
Letter of Recommendation, National Merit Scholarship Program
It seems like these stats put her in a fairly good chance of acceptance to her program - but perhaps those stats are not good enough for much merit aid? (Out-of-staters pay through the nose - wish OH would enter into a tuition consortium with PA, but no such luck.)

Would appreciate answers to any or all - you can use the question numbers for convenience's sake. Thanks!

I can’t answer number 1 and 3, but I can address question 2.

You will get an accepted notifying you as to whether you were just accepted into the university or whether you were also accepted into the DAAP major that you applied for. It is very possible to be accepted into UC and NOT get into the requested major at DAAP.

University of Cincinnati has a rolling admissions process meaning that you will be notified of your admissions decision within three weeks of receipt of your completed application. During especially busy periods, they state that it may take slightly longer.

As for scholarship consideration, most are merit-based and only require a completed application, with receipt of HS transcripts, standardized test scores. A letter of recommendation, while optional for admissions consideration for most programs, is looked at for scholarship review, if available. My understanding, however, is that we won’t find out what scholarships/need-based aid we may qualify for until the April timeframe, and, of course we have until May 1st to accept the offer.

Oh, and good luck. My daughter’s app is complete, and she’s applying for Interior Design too.

Taxguy, thanks - I’ve read a lot of your posts, all great info.

Balthezar - I just read your thread about UC’s issues with their interface, and now understand why it took four weeks for UC to get my D’s app from the Common App - now everything is showing as received, so we’re waiting. I was hoping that merit info would come earlier, but it is what it is - tough to have to wait so long! I’ll try to remember to check in with you about how your daughter and mine did!

IDMomma, my daughter just heard back today and was admitted to the Interior Design program. Stats: ACT Composite 30, UW GPA 3.93, top 7% of class, 6 APs, honors in other courses when available, good leadership and design ECs, Out of State.

Taxguy, just wanted to give you a shoutout for your detailed descriptions of various programs/schools that you visted when going through this with your daughter. It was helpful in determining whether to consider DAAP, and its likely where she’ll attend after getting all the bottom lines from her other colleges.

In addition to DAAP, she’s been admitted to SCAD, Auburn, and Kansas State so far. Still waiting to hear from Pratt Institute, and Virginia Tech.

Thanks again for everything, Taxguy, and you should be hearing any day now, IDMomma.

Balthezar, congrats to your daughter! Her accomplishments are similar to my D’s, with the exception of number of AP courses. This is her first choice school, so we’re eagerly awaiting the decision. App was submitted on 9/24, notified on 10/29 that their system had finally picked it up from the Common App, and all supporting materials were already there. So I’m guessing we’ll hear by the end of next week. Thanks for letting me know.

Balthezar,
Congratulations to your daughter for being accepted to DAAP! If you don’t mind me asking, what date did the university confirm that they had all of her materials?

The system picked up my application and all of my materials on October 29th, does anyone know an approximate date I can expect a decision if I applied to DAAP for industrial design?

I’ve been told by an Admissions supervisor that the Industrial Design, Graphics Design, and Architecture applications, and I believe one other program that I can’t remember now, hold their applications to get a look at the application pool as a whole before making admissions decisions. My suggestion would be to specifically contact Abby Schleicher, Asst Dir of Processing, for specifics on when you might expect a decision. She can also let you know the specific programs that are held. Post here when you get that last program and I’m sure it would be appreciated. Start a new thread specific to the programs that are subject to the hold for further applicant pool review. Oh, and I confirmed all docs received on 10/29 too.

I’d assume even for the held programs that you’d receive a decision shortly after (Dec 15th?) the early action deadline of 12/1.

Balthezar, my daughter was just informed that she was accepted into the DAAP! She’d been informed last week that her transcripts had been processed (the last piece), and just logged on to find her acceptance. Hooray! Now to wait to file the FAFSA, and see if she’s offered any of the scholarships. Maybe our girls will get to meet!

Outstanding IDMomma! Congratulations! She’ll first be considered for the Cincinnatus Scholarship Merit Aid based on her completed application. We’ll need to get in FAFSA as soon as possible, but they usually release financial aid decisions in the early April timeframe.

Balthezar - thanks! Do you have any idea if UC deducts the value of any private scholarships that a student receives from any awards that UC offers to them? I know that some schools do that, unfortunately, just not sure about UC. BTW, as your D is also applying to VT, I’ve posted the same question there, if you don’t know how VT handles that and want to follow the responses.

I don’t know the answer to that IDMomma, but if I were you, I’d just call the financial aid office and ask them. They’ll know the answer there. You just get opinions here, and while most times those opinions prove true, asking directly is the way I’d go. I’ve spoken to many in the adminsistration at a variety of schools that my daughter is considering, and I’ve never had anyone who seemed less than happy to answer my questions.

Thanks Balthezar - I’m finding that I may have misunderstood about what some schools do - the Virginia Tech forum posters on this site said that VT just won’t allow scholarships to exceed the Cost of Attending. Makes sense!

Congrats on the ID DAAP acceptances! The competition to get into the program is intense. My son spent one year in the Arch program before transferring to Industrial Design. He is now in his 2nd year of the ID curriculum and will begin his first co-op next week.

I have been very impressed with the ID program. Make sure your kids are prepared to work their tails off… the studios sound like they would test anyone! However, my son loves it.

They’re saying scholarship notification of scholarship dollar amounts will be around mid-march. For Cincinnatus, and I’m a little confused by this, they say initial notification of a Cincinnatus award will be mid to late February, with the actual dollar amount of Cincinnatus occuring with the remaining scholarships mid-march.

I believe what they’re saying with Cincinnatus is that you’ll know you’re receiving it mid to late february, but the official financial aid award letter containing both merit and need-based aid, your total financial aid package, will be sent mid march.

Also heard that honors college notification will be sent mid to late february too.

Oh, one more thing theilsanne. You’re cutting it close. If your app was submitted, and ALL required materials received and you had at least a 3.2, you’ll be considered for Cincinnatus, otherwise, well, you won’t. Here’s the text they use:

To be considered for awards, incoming freshmen with a minimum 3.2 unweighted high school GPA must have a complete application for admission (the Common Application including UC-specific areas, high school-submitted transcript, official test scores sent directly from testing agencies, and at least one letter of recommendation) by December 1st of their senior year. Eligible Cincinnatus scholars will be determined by academic program.*

Just an update - my daughter (DAAP, Interior Design) has been notified that she is eligible for a Cincinnatus scholarship (gotta love the vague “worth $1500 per year or more”, and was given the opportunity to apply for a Regional Alumni Association scholarship (we’re out of state). Balthezar mentioned Honors college notification would be sometime in the mid-to-late February time frame, so we’ll see if her numbers are high enough for an offer there, too.

It’s tough - this school is her top choice. #2 is a state university that is throwing just about everything that they’ve got at her, money-wise (we’re down to paying board only, for four years). Our gut reaction is “State U.”, but we’re willing to wait, in order to given UC a chance to offer their package. I can only hope that whatever UC offers, the decision will be a no-brainer, either way.

Balthezar, did your daughter ever hear from VA Tech, or is she like mine - applied Regular Decision, and probably won’t hear a thing until April?
