Completion of High School Subject Requirements - If you met the Scholarship and Examination Requirements in high school but did not satisfy the 15-course, A-G Subject Requirement, you can take transferable college courses in the missing subjects (earning a C or better in each required course) to become eligible.

^That's me. I graduated from a CA HS and had a D in one of the A-G requirements. So, by going off of this I should be able to take an equivalent UC-transferable course at a CC and apply to UCM the same year for admission the following Fall. I was under the impression that CSUs currently don't take lower-div transfers, and some UCs don't, but is UCM currently taking them? Can anyone offer some clarification? Thanks.

I’m not really versed in this subject at all, but from what it sounds like you wouldn’t be considered a lower division transfer student, just a freshman that is satisfying the courses they didn’t pass in high school.

Technically, that requirement I quoted from the site was listed directly under the heading “Lower-Division Transfer”

So, technically, I think they would still consider me a transfer, not a freshman, student. Besides, I would plan to take a full course load for the one year at CC. Not just taking the one course I need to make-up. Although, I know I can take the one course and apply as a Freshman to any UC.

Thanks for pointing that out. Anyone else have a lead on UCM accepting lower-div transfers? I’m sending them an email just to be sure too, but I most likely won’t hear back for 2-10 days.

AHHH. That makes more sense then. Yeah, definitely considered lower division if you’re planning on taking courses for a year anyways. Just out of curiosity, if you’re planning on taking an extra year, why not just apply the next fall and finish out an additional year? Then you’ll have enough time to finish your GenEd and most, if not all of your major prep. Additionally, you’d be able to TAG and/or be TAP certified for whichever school you intend on transferring to.

Anyways, I think your plan to contact UCM admissions is your best bet. :)

Oh, that’s certainly my plan: two years at CC with IGETC certification, all major pre-reqs, and a TAG to UCSC. I just happen to stumble upon the UCM link and became very curious about the lower-div transfer option. I figure that if I can apply to UCM with only one year at CC, then why not!? If I’m accepted, then I could do a visit and see what the financial aid looks like and see if I would like to go straight there instead of waiting one more year at CC to try for other UCs.

UCI, UCD, and UCR all do lower division transfers too, but you can only apply to the college of agriculture for UCD. Just in case you’re interested in some other places.

Thanks, jdom! That matrix had exactly what I was looking for, along with a lot of other great information too. Turns out UCM also accepts Spring transfers.
