I took Chem, US, and Math 2 and was hoping to apply as an engineering major. My US score was 800, Chem 690, and Math 2 540. I heard that the UC's only consider the top 2 scores is that true? Also since I was hoping to be an engineer but my math score aren't good, would it help to apply to another major and how hard would it be to switch to something like chemical engineering?

540 on Math II? Seriously consider a different field because if you’re not good at math now, you’re going to flat-out suffer in engineering.

Any other responses. I’m not 100% set on engineering but I won’t let inadequate math preparation get in the way of my passion. Does anyone know if the UC’s take the best two SAT scores?

The objective schools (UCSD, UCSC, etc.) will only look at the top 2. The holistic schools (UCLA, Berkeley, etc.) will look at all of them. You’ll probably have trouble getting into engineering with 690 and 540 for your science SAT II’s.

Transferring isn’t too hard for people with good grades. Getting good grades might be tough if you have “inadequate math preparation.” Still, it might be a better shot than directly applying to engineering.

OP,
Both your chem and math test scores are not great. If you search around the college board web site, there are stats on percentile.

It is good to have passion but being realistic with your strength is just as important. As TheHutt said, you will suffer both in college and in career if you are doing something you are not strong at.

Did you get those scores because you didn’t study? Do you believe you can do much better with more preparation? There is a difference between that vs just not being good at a subject.

Depending on what type of engineering you want to do, being good at math can be very important.

I am in software engineering. Although math is require in college, most software jobs actually don’t use much math at all. I have a family member in chemical engineering and a friend in civil engineering, math is require in college and might be used everyday in those jobs.

Thanks guys I’m not horrible in math (I’ll be taking Calc BC Senior Year), but I never learned a lot of the material on the test, what do you think the average engineer scored on the Math 2?

^800. Or AT LEAST 750+

If you’re going to apply this year, why don’t you consider taking Math 2 again after preparation? They will take scores from Oct/Nov/Dec test dates.

If you wanna be an engineer you definitely should retake the tests, 700+ should be enough. Don’t let these other posters say you’re terrible at math b/c of a SAT II score…SAT II Math 2 does not equal all math in real life.

Engineering applications are evaluated by the School of Engineering and Math Level 2 and science Subject Tests are closely scrutinize. Bad scores in these tests do not bode well for your chance.
