Does UCB and other UCs look at 1st semester senior year?

Right now I have 4 B's out of 7 of my classes.. it's not looking good, I'm trying to get them up though. So I was wondering will the UC schools be able to see the grades I get in my 1st semester, even if I turn in my application by November 30th? The semester ends at the end of December...

Do you guys think I have enough time to raise my Bs up to As? I've never gotten so many Bs in my life.. I'm typically a straight A student. I'm taking 6 APs and I'm stressing over college apps. I'm dying over here!!!

I believe they only look at first semester grades if you are “on the bubble”, and you are requested to fill out a “supplemental”. Once you get in, there are rules for not getting rescinded.

okay, so they’ll only request my 1st semester grades if they are unsure if i should be accepted or not? is that what u meant by “on the bubble”?

UCB selects a very small fraction of applications for ‘augmented review’, requesting some supplemental information from the applicant. There are at least three reasons for augmented review - someone who is borderline and they need the data to help pick among the various borderline applications, someone who has a special talent or accomplishment that may warrant acceptance outweighing the normal academic factors, and someone who has mentioned a disability - and not all signal that someone is the right at the point where the decision could go either way.

The supplemental questionnaire asks for 1st semester grades, a single reference, and a bunch of questions appropriate to the reason your application was selected.

For the large majority of applicants, you are selected or rejected purely on what is in the UC application.

The only other use of first semester senior grades is to validate your conditions of acceptance - if you are picked, you are required to take the classes you listed as your senior year intentions and you must meet minimum grades. At least in the past that has meant a minimum of 3.0 unweighted gpa for each of the two senior year semesters with no failing grades. Someone who doesn’t meet the conditions had better have a good explanation to send in, otherwise they are likely to have their spot rescinded and looking for a backup to attend in the fall.
