I have 3.9 UW GPA with lots of AP classes, I have good ACT scores (35) and good SAT IIs. I think I'll be able to get good recs and essays, but my weak link is the EC part. Does Berkeley look at ECs a lot?

Are you in-state?

Nope. Living in Colorado.

Hmm. What EC's do you have?

200+ hours volunteering in public library, (going to be)200+ hours doing some research with Colorado State university, some involvement with local clubs, self studying Chinese/History. That's about it.

That isn't shabby at all. I think you have a decent chance.

Actually, those are impressive, especially the research.

It looks impressive... until the officer sees that the research has nothing to do with my major. >_<

What's your intended major?

So what? You still did the research, which shows initiative and intelligence.

I'm think about Computer Science/History/Economics, and I'm currently isolating plant DNA.

Doesn't really fit in too well, but I guess the experience is good anyhow.

Just apply as undecided L&S.
By the way, no recs required for UC's.

No recs? Oh well no big loss.

Personally I think Berkeley puts huge stock into ECs, but I still think GPA (including trend)/course work, test scores, and your essays are probably as important if not more important. I believe for many ECs make or break their application- for some, it gets them in, for some, it gets them rejected. Best of luck and your ECs (and general app) seem very good. Write good essays and you have a great chance.

Berkeley puts a huge emphasis on essays IMO.
