So my orientation is tomorrow, and I'm looking to switch into the Math/Econ department. The first class I need to take is Econ 11 and Calculus of Several Variables.

Online, the class schedule shows that most of the prerequisite math classes are pretty much full. What confused me was that one of the 32A classes is capped off at 25, and I don't understand how a lower div math class could be capped at 25. This leads me to believe that the school isn't unveiling all the available seats just yet, and is probably holding them for those who enroll later.

Any advice on this matter?

I was at 202. There are some classes that they hold spots for, though I don’t know anything about which math or science ones have spots held since I’m going into comms. What happened for us was if we wanted one of the classes they were holding spots for, we told our orientation leader during the planning process, and at the end of the day when we actually enrolled, your leader tries to get you into the class (even though it says closed).

The only ones I remember off the top of my head were Ling 1, Anthro 33 and a handful of Psych classes. And I think the majority of people had to get themselves added this way to at least one of their classes, so it’s not like it’s gonna be an uncommon thing.

So I was at the Friday 202 orientation too and my student advisor said that the school holds spots open for incoming transfers in only the lower div requirements classes that you haven’t completed. In terms of Upper Div, UCLA does not hold any spots. However, your major’s department have some restricted courses only available to their student in first pass; afterwards… it is a free for all! lol

Good luck with getting your classes at orientation… I barely got some anthro classes and i am not even talking about classes that i’m that interested in. Bahh don’t know how it will be for people in the later orientations. :X

Swagger – do not worry about the classes being full on URSA, at least for mathematics courses. The math department not only holds spots for additional incoming students, but they will override class limits to get you in, provided you need the class. It will all be taken care of at orientation.

Impacted majors, on the other hand, are likely to have a much more difficult time getting into classes which are already full (i.e. just considering all of the posts made by psychology majors on the Facebook page).

in response to the post by taylorm0192, impacted majors like communications, econ, biz econ, nursing, and the arts/architecture majors have less difficulty getting classes because the number of students in those majors are not that big.

however, it is impacted AND popular majors like poli sci, psych, history, english, bio, sociology which are likely to have a more difficult time getting into classes which are already full. These majors have plenty of people in those majors.

this is from talking to people in orientation.
