Does UCLA use UC gpa?

My freshman grades suck. (Only one A) But I took a pretty rigourous courseload except for in math. And I was going through a lot in my family life this year. (Parents are back in court battle :( Divorce SUCKS)

Anyway, my question is. If I shape the heck up and get a 4.0 10-12th and take some college courses will UCLA forgive freshman year?

I hear that when calculating your gpa UCLA throws out freshman grades completely but still looks at them. Is this true?

Oh and another thing I live in Louisiana. Does that make a difference?

bumpity bump bump…

Aww come on guys please :(

Bumpin it on up to the East side!

How do you calculate an out-of-state applicant’s GPA? Do you give extra credit for AP courses even if thle school doesn’t have “UC-certified” courses? In calculating a nonresident’s GPA, UC will grant honors weight for AP or IB courses only, but not for school-designated honors courses.

Thank you for your input on my thread. I’ll try my best to answer your question. First of all, when you answered my post, I thought you were already in college helping someone 2 or 3 years your junior, but then, I saw your profile and saw you were only 15! Well, here is my input. :3

You’re still only a sophomore right? Or about to become one right? Don’t sweat it! You have plenty of time to boost your grades up for the next three years. Yes, your grades in freshman year may not be very hot, but look forward to your sophomore, junior, and senior years being hot. Join at least two or three academic or fundraising clubs like the Academic League, Debate team, Octagon club, or Key club if they have those in your school while your still an underclassman. Also, try to stick to one sport and develop yourself in it so that you can become Varsity. Colleges like that. What colleges like are not the amount of clubs or sports your in, but the devotion you put into one club and one sport.

Now, about your GPA. Getting into UCLA has become really competitive. It’s admission for undergrad students is about 20%, so if possible try to get it at least 4.2. But if 4.0 is what you’re aiming for then be sure to do so. UCLA has been trying to let in minorities get in, so maybe that’ll boost your chances. Even Harvard would probably accept you not only because your ethnicity is a minority in their admission, but you’ve lived a hard life, and you are trying your best to keep grades up. Put that in your essays and that’ll be good to look at.

And yes, in calculating your GPA, UCs like UCLA do indeed throw out your freshman grades, so your GPA ends up being higher for UCs than your overall weighted grade in high school. Remember how my grades looked? The UC one was much higher than the overall one for high school. Plus, there is a possibility they may look at your freshman grades for the heck of it. If they see you improved since your freshman year, then that may help you get in. :)

Sorry it’s a long post! I hope that helps! I’m also trying to get into UCLA, so let’s hope we see each other! ^_^
