Does UCSD accept people who are a little bit below their ideal score?

This may be a dumb question - I'm just a little confused about how the system works.
I used the score chart and I believe I fall a few points below the 7700 or whatever they want students to have. Does that mean I'm out of the running immediately and don't have a chance since it's a points system?

you mean 1700?
i dont think you’re at all out of the running
i have a friend who had a 1500 who got in last year to ucsd (but declined ucsd’s acceptance)

From what I can tell, you must be over the cutoff to be admitted. The cutoff last year was 7744; the wait list cutoff, however, was somewhere around 7600, so all hope is not lost if you don’t quite make it.

@jsungoh what was her ACT score?

I used the score chart and depending on how they decide to give me points me score ranged from like a 7500 to a 7850. Like, I’m a first generation, hold a lot of leadership position, good amount of community service, I had a traumatic experience I overcame - so it all depends on how many points out of the maximum possible they give me … which is totally at their discretion. The GPA and SAT one is self explanatory but the rest is up to the admissions committee.
So I feel like 50/50 with my chances of getting into this school because of that. Which is hard because with every other school I feel very clear about my chances :/

I found it best to not worry. Many are boarderline for a few schools and UCSD just happens to be yours. Just know that wherever you go you’ll do fine as long as you put in the effort. I for one feel glad i didnt get into a tougher school like Berkeley because if i did go there, i would probably be having so much trouble just to even pass. Just enjoy your senior year and let the colleges do their thing.

@annathatshibby, I’m pretty much in the same boat as you. My point total is anywhere from 7650 to 8050. I’m pretty sure I have exactly 7800 points, which basically puts me right on the boarder… The cutoff only went from 7738 to 7744 from 2009 to 2010, so I’m hoping it doesn’t go up more than 56 this year. Just wait for March and good luck!

After I calculated my points, I ended up getting a minimum score of 8214 trying to be completely fair and not giving myself points that they would not give me. I heard this year 53,455 applied to ucsd this year so my guess is that the cuttoff will be around from 8050-8150 (provided that from 2008 to 2009 there was an increase of 164pts rejecting around 2000 applicants)
Another point i want to make is that my counselor (one of the trained readers for admissions to ucsd) told me that for special circumstances you can get 0,150-350, 500 so is not 250 or 500. Also, you don’t need two minor positions to get 150 points for leadership. You get 150 if you are a presidents of a club, also if you are president of the same club for two years then, you get 300 just to clarify.

It really depends what UCSD’s enrollment goals are this year. Their website says their goal was 3600 for 2010; I believe it was around 4200+ for 2008. So if their enrollment goals drop to 3000, then the cutoff will likely be above 8000. However, I doubt the goals will go below 3300, because the UCs said themselves they want to slowly being admitting less students; they currently enroll too many students and I read they want to reduce enrollment over the next 10 or so years. Regardless, I think the cutoff could easily surpass 7900.
Also, the average GPA of applicants for 2009 and 2010 was 3.78. This year the average is 3.77; so competition isn’t particularly increasing.
@VaGaSi: do you know if being in a single parent household renders any points? And could two minor positions render one 300 points? I have been an editor on the school newspaper for two years and president of a club for one year… Thanks.

JeSuis: It really depends, if you explained in you personal statement that you come from a single parent household ( due to parents’ divorce or death of a parent) then you will get points. For leadership you will get at least 150 pts for being president club(that’s for sure). My best guess is that because is not editor in chief you will not get full pts even if you are editor for two years.

I have a question that i didn’t ask my counselor, on my application i wrote that i was the school newspaper editor as the title for the leadership position but on the little description i clearly stated i’m the school newspaper editor in chief. Do they read the little descriptions?? otherwise i don’t get 300 pts. This is why i decided to not give myself points for leadership Thanks

Since they read the entire essays for information, I assume they read the little descriptions for information also. I talked to an admissions counselor over the Summer and she said they review the entire application.

Do you know what is needed for low income? Would less than $45000 in a 2-person household get me half points (I’m assuming not)?
And there was a section near income that asked if I lived in a single parent household; I checked “yes” for both 2009 and 2010.

Based on what i read, you get half point for a little less than 60,000 so i assume you will get 150 pts.And for the other question i would say yes so you will get anywhere from 150-350 pts.

Also, do you know if Eleanor Roosevelt college is popular because that’s why i put as my first college choice thanks for the replay.

If admitted (which it seems you will be), I’m almost 100% positive you will get into ERC. I’ve heard of people who put ERC last and were admitted to it; so few people rank it in their top three that you should be guaranteed a spot. :)

Thank you very much… i wish you the best of lucks in getting into UCSD (or any other college that you applied to). I’m curious, to what UCSD college did you apply to??

I ranked them: Muir, Marshall, Warren, Sixth, Revelle, Roosevelt.

Good luck to you too! UCSD is my first choice; hope to see you there this Fall :)

didn’t ucsd change their admissions process this year to a more “holistic” approach?

[UCSD Adopts New Admissions Process|The Guardian](UCSD Adopts New Admissions Process – The UCSD Guardian)

Yeah, I heard this; I suppose it is official. The oh-so-fantastic (eye roll) holistic review has triumphed over the actually somewhat fair comprehensive review.

They can now “average SAT scores”…? Does that mean superscore, or does that mean if I took it twice they’re screwing me over?

OH GOD. I hope they don’t average scores. That lowers me by over 100 points. :/

Well I personally asked my counselor if they moved to holistic review and she told they are using the comprehensive review for this year applicants and that they will start using the holistic review for the class of 2012 since they are not required to take the SAT subject test.

Okay, because I think the holistic review could kill my chances.
