Does UCSD save spots (for classes) for transfers?

So Math 20E wasn't offered at my community college and it is a pre-req for some of my major classes. Looking at the schedule, the Math 20E class I wanted to take is full. The other section would overlap with my other classes. So, do they save spots for transfers?

The Mathematics Department, like many others, does reserve spots for new students (both Transfer and Freshman). For 20E, we’ll be opening somewhere between 4-6 seats per section prior to Transfer enrollment. While we do this, the waitlist remains static - so these seats are ONLY available to new students.

After Transfer students enroll, we’ll open more seats, this time for Freshmen (for 20E this will only be 1-2 seats per section - for something like 10A this will be over 20 seats per section). Finally, after new Freshmen enroll, we’ll open any remaining seats up to room capacities.

How about math 20D?

We’ll be opening similar amounts of seats for transfer students in all sections of 20D-E and F.

And to answer anyone else that might be reading…

We also hold seats specifically for transfer students in Math 102, 109, 170A and 180A. And we save seats for all new students (freshman and transfer) in the remainder of our lower division offerings - the lower the course level, the more the balance is for freshmen.

The best way to estimate what seats are being held in math is to assume that any given section will end up with an enrollment around 35 (most sections end up between 32 and 38). The difference between the current limit and 35 is what we’ll be releasing later in August.

Thanks! That was a relief.

Is this the same for other departments, for example econ?
