Does UCSD = UC of the Socially Dead?

I've heard a lot of rumors that UCSD is notorious for lacking a social scene.
Anybody going to UCSD agree with this? Or is this simply a rumor?

I heard its true.
It becomes dead in the weekend since majority goes home

There are a few old threads about this that I’ve read. I’m too lazy to look them up, but the general consensus seems to be that it’s entirely up to you how active your social life is. Social events and parties, things of that nature aren’t just going come to you like they might at some of the other UCs, but if you’re outgoing enough and put yourself out there you’ll find things to do pretty much every weekend and most days throughout the week. The consensus though also seems to be that in the evenings UCSD’s campus is pretty quiet. I think that has more to do with the campus being so spread out. To put it in perspective, UCSD’s campus covers an area that’s about 5 times the size of UCLA and it has significantly less students about 3000 less undergrads and about half the grad students. So just based on the population density you’re less likely to run into other students than somewhere like UCLA.

I don’t know much about your question, but I’m guessing the statement that people made about their party scene is relative… If a good party scene is important to you Santa Barbara would’ve been the choice.

I think it’s what you make of it, but a good friend of mine attends UCSD and thinks the name is very fitting. But she joined a co-op last year and now she’s loving it and living happily as a hippie with a great circle of friends, so I guess you gotta find your niche.

Every time I’ve visited my friends at UCSD it is always a HUGE party but they don’t live on campus. Also PB is a very short drive and always a good time if you’re old enough :)

san diego state university, aka STDSU, is down the street if you want parties.

It’s pretty quiet and a lot of people turn to greek life for parties, but it’s really what you make of it.

@Postsecret, Do you know if the co-op is called the Che Cafe?

C’mon OP! If you want your school to be a party school, you make it a party school. Even if there are hordes of zombie preMeds, that’s not stopping you from buying, and drinking, alcohol in excess.

i like that guys answer ^

i currently go to ucsd and YES it is socially dead!
you can find your group but it is hard. you must search stuff out. PB does help but you need to be 21 or have a fake

^ ^ Me too lol

In reference to CosmicBubble’s post

No. This title belongs to uci

I heard about the gas lamp. What goes on there?

Sacrificial rituals–generally freshman chicks. Frat boys get to eat the heart.

i graduated high school in 2004, and while several of my friends went to college, i did not. so i’ve visited a lot of them while they were in college and i rank the partying like so

1) berkeley
2) santa barbara
3) san diego
4) santa cruz
5) ucla
6) davis
7) uci

i lived in san diego for 3 years from ages 22-25 (prime partying years if you ask me) and i would say 40% of my social life (social life in general, not just partying/clubbing) revolved around UCSD students. so 40% is a pretty high percentage considering i wasnt even going to school at the time

the gas lamp is just a small district of downtown. i would say they are known for their restaurants. if you are in to the night life scene, you can’t go wrong with downtown. there are a lot of popular clubs and bars within walking distance of each other. but personally i like pacific beach just for their more casual bars. don’t forget that you are also just 30 minutes away from mexico.

but i don’t think a social life in college has to be synonymous with partying. san diego has fantastic beaches, GREAT surf, great places to hike, great places to eat. if your social life at UCSD primarily revolves around partying then i feel sorry for you because you are not getting the most out of the san diego experience.

The gas lamp district is in downtown San Diego, it’s about 15 miles away from La Jolla. It’s just like any other downtown area there are clubs, restaurants, and shops. Only really accessible though if you have a car.

@navymike192 Thanks for the great post. Glad to hear from someone with experience in the area. Don’t plan on partying too much so it’s great to hear of the other options
