Hello,
I’m currently a junior and I was transferred from China. Because of my Chinese school’s transcript(the courses I took in China were way harder than here) and the difficulties I had as a newcomer(I came to school as a sophomore), my GPA is only 3.3 right now. I am currently taking 4 honor courses and 1 AP, next year I’ll be taking 5-6 APs.If UGA recalculate high school students’ GPA, I would probably have a chance. Especially when I see their first year students have a overall GPA of 3.9, middle 50% of 3.8-3.9, middle 50% of honors students have even gone to 4.18.(That’s pretty crazy if UGA uses a 4.0 scale.) Despite of my SAT(which will within the range from 1750-2000 as far as I concerned.), would I be competitive to other students? I can speak both Chinese and English, and I will take German III honors next year. :(( :((
Thanks a lot!!
Yes, UGA will recalculate your GPA. They add .5 weight for APs if weight is not already added by the school (for some this can make it lower or higher). That being said, you will be compared to the rest of the applicant pool so it is hard to say where you stand. You can still do well this semester and next semester to improve your chances.
UGA will take into account your previous international status as well.
Just wondering though, if Chinese courses were way harder, shouldn’t you have a higher GPA in these American classes?
Thanks for replying.
Good question, Chinese courses were harder, however they are limited in quite a few subjects. For example we would spend 3 month on only quadratic function and its transformation and so on, rather than here you spend 1 month on each chapter and go on. For courses like chemistry, I can deal with it without breaking a sweat. However courses like biology and apush, almost crushed me at the beginning.
So you aren’t used to the pace of American courses? Understandable. We aren’t really known for the best high school education systems in the world anyways.
I don’t think the 3.3 is awful, but you will have to really improve in other areas. I would suggest getting a really high SAT/ACT score, writing great essays (a good topic would be about China), having some good extracurriculars, and getting a great teacher recommendation.
