Does UIUC have a easier workload than Purdue?

I have been hearing that Purdue has a lot of people complain about how much homework they have during the week. It seems like hell after hearing about it...not to be impolite or anything.

Please inform me about how much homework you get a day or week at UIUC or Purdue

Engineering is a lot of work no matter where you do it. Some classes may be easier at one school while others may be easier at another. It will depend more on your professors than the school though. In the end everything will balance out. Engineering is tough anywhere you do it.

Unfortuanley, you will realize very soon after you start school that engineering students, in general, like to whine a lot about how difficuilt their classes are and how much work they have to do. However, any school that is half way descent is going to give you a lot of work. If you choose engineering, you are going to have to deal with that.

Now I will tell you that if you have your priorities straight and you work efficiently, you will not have to spend all of your time on homework and you can make good grades. You might have to pull an all nighter every once in a while, but you will have time for a life if you work properly.

Another thing you will notice about engineering students is that they are not worried about finding jobs (even in “this” economy). While business and social science students seem stressed, engineering students know that there are jobs for them when they graduate.

comn there has to be a difference on how much help you are provided and how much time it takes to study to pass a test right?? i mean … college is different from HS… you cant just cram anymore…

itoushiro, nobody here can provide a magical answer to all your problems. College is college. It’s time to grow up and take matters into your own hands. Nobody here can decide what future is best for you.

Everybody in engineering from State U up to MIT likes to complain about their courseload. That’s one reason why I dont like making friends with engineering students because they tend to be whiny. Anyway, it’s not reasonable to expect anybody to be able to authoritatively compare the two.

If saying “I can’t go out tonight I have homework” then I guess I’m whiny. Otherwise most people I know do not complain about the amount of work we do. In fact we tend to avoid talking about school when we’re not at school haha.

A lot of people don’t leave it at that. A typical conversation with a fellow engineering student involves them complaining about how they have no free time, have been studying for 18 hours a day for the last week or some lab is busting their arse. More enjoyable conversations happen when you get an exam back and people will spend a few minutes explaining to you why they missed 5-10 points and what they could have done differently to get those points back as if you care. Sure there are a few engineering students that realize nobody wants to listen to that crap, but many do not.

You can’t tell me that doesn’t sound familiar, JoeJoe.

Oh yes my roommate from last year used to complain about homework all the time. He was more so trying to impress people by it. My point was that you can’t generalize engineering students by saying they all complain about homework. This in particular is what set me off.

I’ve yet to meet any other engineering students I’d consider “whiny” about their school work.

Engineering coursework takes time. Lots of the courses involve labs, and doing problems. That takes time. It’s just the nature of the types of courses.

I am not sure what you’re really worried about. Why does it matter to you to know whether professors give pop quizzes, or which school has more intense workload? You’re not going to get by with minimum work in engineering anyways. If you’re already afraid of the workload, than engineering may not be for you. Perhaps you should look into different major.

OP, go to the school where you think you will be happiest. honestly no one can give you general answers, it will be TOTALLY dependent on what your major is, what classes you take, what kind of student you are. visit the schools you are considering and find out which one you think will fit you best. you’d rather go to a harder school where you are happier than to a slightly easier school where you are unhappy, it will be way easier to do work at the harder school if you like where you are than the alternative.

The workload will be pretty much the same at all schools. The lazy engineer feels as much stress as the hardworking engineer. It’s all relative.

And the engineering students who don’t whine have just as much work as the engineering majors who DO whine.

DD says that she has had some pop quizes. Bottom line…the profs expect the students to keep up with the homework and classwork…and know the material.

If you like the coursework in engineering and enjoy the types of problems that need to be solved, you will not mind the hours of work.

itoushiro…why are you so concerned about the amount of homework? Like I said…if the subject matter is interesting to you…and it’s what you enjoy doing, it doesn’t MATTER how much homework there is…you won’t mind doing it. If you hate the subject matter…you’ll hate the homework even if it’s only five minutes a night.

Spend some time figuring out what you WANT TO DO…and realize there will be a workload regardless. Also…you need to realize that the homework load in college is MUCH more than in high school for almost every major.
