Hello guys. I’m applying to UNC as an OOS student, and I’m trying to decide between a BA or BS in computer science. At some schools (such as the University of Michigan), it is marginally easier to get into a BA program in CS versus a BS program. Is this true for UNC as well? I would rather take the BS route, but the school is a reach for me and I’m trying to increase my chances of acceptance as much as possible. Plus, I made some pretty bad grades in math last year, which would theoretically be more of a problem if I apply to their BS program. Would there be a difference?
to my knowledge, UNC accepts everyone to their college of arts and sciences and then you go from there. I don’t think majors affect your chances. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, though
Yes, intended majors have some sort of factor in the admissions process. It wouldn’t make sense for someone who has shown concentration in math or science to want to be an English major. This just makes them seem directionless. Ironically, when I asked an admissions rep. if it mattered, they said no. However, when two of my friends had basically the same stats and one wanted to major in Journalism while the other wanted Humanities, the one who wanted to major in Humanities was accepted. Although I wish it didn’t, it does make sense to admit students based on intended major because if there are already so many applicants applying for one intended major, those with the best stats are accepted.
@mannylopez123 Interesting. Did the admissions rep say that they don’t see your major? Or did they say that “it doesn’t matter”?
I’m probably just going to apply for a BS, since the BA and BS are both in the CS Department (and should have similar admissions standards).
They said they it along the lines of “No, we do not consider your major in admissions.”
