Does undergrad prestige really matter for grad school?

I understand why so many people on CC are obsessed with ivies and top schools. I believe they do give an upper hand if ur not going to grad school. But I heard for law school specifically that it is ALL about gpa+LSAT. Wouldn't it make sense to go to a public school or a mediocre school like davis/irvine (which really isn't mediocre if u think about it.. its top 50 out of 3600 colleges in America) and get a high gpa compared to going to duke lets say and getting a 3.0-3.5? Law school admissions is even more focused on the LSAT... is undergrad prestige even a factor? I've heard from many of my friends at harvard, NYU, and columbia law that many of their peers went to state schools and received a very high gpa and LSAT.. so if you know your smart and can do well in a UC or state school and do "well" on the LSAT, would it make sense to just go there?

UCs are public Ivies.

Yes, law schools look first at GPA+LSAT, but for those going to the top 20 law schools, these schools do take the "quality" of undergrad into consideration and may favor a top school grad over say CalSt grad (definately w/ the same GPA and even if the Ivy Leaguer is a little below the state school grad).

Just go to the best school that you feel confortable w/ and you'll subsequently do well. And before you take the LSAT talk to some folks in the most dissatified profession, the law, and on avg they'll say they hated law school and hate practicing law even more...

You're confusing graduate school and law school...they're not at all the same thing.

I would say prestige helps for grad school simply because more resources are available; well-known profs tend to teach at the best schools.

i just randomly searched politicians and their law schools and I saw that colin powell went to city college of new york, dennis kukinich went to case western, barbara boxer went to brooklyn college, ron paul went to Gettysburg College, john edwards went to north carolina state university, huckabee went to Ouachita Baptist University, chris dodd went to Providence College, giulani went to manhattan college..... whats goin on here?

UCs are public Ivies. Sure, if you mean Berkeley and UCLA. Cause the rest arent among the top 10 public unis...maybe Irvine

well... i hate medicine/science/math and those fields will soon decrease in the future and business is always an option... law is prolly what I'll be going for

yes people say they hate practicing law... maybe its the 70 hr weeks? I dunno I should stop watching erin brokovich and a few good men

You say "maybe Irvine," but you don't even mention UCSD? At any rate, the University of California is considered one of the original "public Ivies." I agree, though, that Berkeley and UCLA would be the only "public Ivies" if you were to consider only individual publics rather than systems.

I meant the top UCs: UCB, UCLA, and UCSD (which far outshines Irvine, I think Davis overall is still better than UCI). But my main point is that I thought the OP was putting UCs in the same category as the rest of the state schools around, which even the lowest UC outshines the vast majority of other public institutions.

well i mean the people that may in fact run the entire country are going to north carolina state, manhattan college, brooklyn college, Ouachita Baptist University... etc....

its weird that john kerry went to yale undergrad, but ended up at boston college for law school... that's weird huh? I mean going from the top 3 school to a top 25 law school... he prolly got a low gpa there... it's my whole point i'm trying to make

sorry, i was tryin to remember the name of the other while i was typing, i believe UCSD is higher than Irvine. my bad. but yeah, there are schools such as UMich, UVA, William and Mary, UNC, etc. who are clustered with those, not just Cali unis. i, for one, dont understand why universities feel compelled to compare themselves with Ivies, i mean why cant they be "elite publics"?

kerry had a 2.4 or 2.3 at Yale...lower than bush... and kerry thought he was smarter

Where did the 9 justices of the SCOTUS go to law school?

how about for medical school? Is a 3.0 gpa at harvard better than a 3.7 at georgetown?

youre not comparing two totally different institutions. gtown and harvard are almost on the same level when comparing prestige on this scale. a better question would be a harvard 3.0 and a state u 3.7
