And do they accept them as actual grades or just credit?

they are giving you credit for upto 8 APs. They seem to either waive specific courses/requirements or just give you credit.

Note that you need a score of 4 or a 5 to use your AP’s.

My daughter is a freshman at USC. She has 24 credits from her AP classes. They give you up to 30. Yes you need a 4 or 5 to get the credit.

S1 got sophomore standing with his 32 AP credits and could take higher level Math and Physics. Since he went into Engineering ‘none’ of his courses were waived, he still would have to do the same #of total credits to graduate.

If he had a AP History course he would have been waived out of a required GE. He wished he had!!

yeah as far as GEs go I think only Art History/European History can get you out of the Western Culture req and only AP languages can get you out of the language requirement. But for each 4 or 5 that you get, you can get 4 units of elective credit. So, although you don’t really get course equivalence or anything for a lot of them (don’t know about math/science because that’s not my area) it can really bump up your class standing… for example, I’m technically starting my sophomore year right now but next semester I’m going to be a junior credit-wise because of AP. It can really help you out if you want to graduate early for financial reasons.

You can get 4 units of credit each plus waived out of 2 GE reqs:

*AP US History or AP European History score of 4 or 5
*AP Bio or AP Chem score of 4 or 5

I believe you can waive out of your 3 semester foreign language req with AP Lang 4 or 5, but you only receive 4 units of credit

All other APs give 4 units elective credit.

Generally, the more AP credit you come in with counts toward units needed to graduate–at USC it’s 128 units, however you still need to satisfy the reqs of your major/minor or double majors–and that may mean you don’t really take any advantage from those banked elective credits.

For anyone who seriously wants to graduate in 3 years, you can use the elective credits and 2 GEs for up to 32 units, and complete most single majors. When you start adding more majors, or if you are getting a BFA or other specialized degree, there may not be a way to complete it all in 3 years.

Can I use my AP Art credit (score 5) to satisfy the art requirement?

A 4 or 5 on Art History would satisfy category I, Western Cultures and Traditions. The other Art APs would be elective credit.
