Does USC accept both AP Lit and AP Lang credit?

I got a 5 for AP Lang, but I’m deciding if I need to sign up for the AP Lit test. It’s a bit ambiguous on the site–it says that USC doesn’t take credit from classes of the same subject matter. Do Lit and Comp count as the same subject matter? Thanks!

*Lit and Lang

You can check what any college accepts on the College Board site

Here is a link to answer any questions about USC’s policy related to AP Exams…

OP - I would call USC Dornsife admissions to ask your question (or regular admissions), it use to be very clear but they really changed the AP information since the core changed in 2015…it was very transparent. Because they are both English, I would ask since they do say something about not granting credit for same subject as you mentioned. You may get elective credit, or elevated to higher level in writing or Arts and Letters class, at other schools it is clear they grant for both, but it isn’t as easy to see as it use to be at USC.

The page @wwward shows has very little detail than what they had before, but that is all you can find on a search, unless you go to each school within USC.

For example, when my S got a 5 on Calc BC it started him in Calc III (226) at USC, and he was given 4 math credits (specifically math credit and was able to bypass math 125 and 126) - so I am confused why this isn’t info isn’t consolidated on their AP page on the website like it use to be. If you go to the Viterbi AP page, it does clarify this, but you have to know to hunt it down there.

They do specify which APs knock out GEs:

AP Credits:
You receive 4 elective units for each score of 4 or higher.

General Education credits can be earned with a score of 4 or higher on the following exams:

GE Category I: Art History and European History
GE Category III: Biology, Chemistry, or Physics
Three-semester Foreign Language requirement:
Any foreign language AP exam (except Latin).

Actually I can’t find anything about English Lang or Lit anywhere. hmmmmm…what’s up with that?

Didn’t have time to edit above…I called the articulation office, they both give you 4 elective credits (each) for English Literature and English Language per the lady that answered the phone. She directed me to the above page but couldn’t explain why they don’t list those classes, like we are just supposed to know that. Odd conversation.

It is good to know this because deadline to sign up for AP testing is tomorrow.

I think the USC policy is a little bit confusing. D’17 had the same question.

There seems to be a total limit of 32 hours/credits?

@ Dave_N correct:
“Students may receive a combined maximum of 32 elective units for college courses taken before high school graduation and/or examinations (e.g., AP, IB, or other international exams) taken before matriculation at a two-year or four-year college.”

@CathJR The college board site does not show AP English Language or AP English Lit for USC. Overall, I would not trust a site other than the school site for that kind of information. Many of those sites are not updated as regularly as school site. Ironic however that the USC page doesn’t include it either, but they take credit for it, 100% sure on that.

The USC AP page is horrible and provides no information, and calling USC is hit or miss on whether you get a nice person or someone annoyed that you are calling. Which has always annoyed me since I am the customer paying big bucks. It seems the nicest people are at the understaffed giant public schools - that always amazes me.
