So if I get both scholarships, does that mean I get an additional $3000 per semester (w/ the Honors AES scholarship) in addition to my National Merit Finalist scholarship?
No they don’t stack. Did your AES notification if so when did you apply?
@3scoutsmom Aww bummer. I got my AES Honors notification in my email (I had applied in September) and I was initially excited, but it looks like I won’t be able to use that money.
It’s not too bad you can stack either with outside scholarships so long as they are specific to tuition. Just be aware that any scholarship award not used on tuition books or certain fees is taxable.
Is your AES award showing in your galaxy portal under awards or just in your email?
@3scoutsmom I don’t have any outside scholarships at the moment however and stacking both would have really helped. Looks like I’ll have to get looking.
I received it in my email. I haven’t looked at the galaxy website in a while.
@QuestionerZ If you get national merit it’s pretty much a full ride
Full tuition and fees for 8 semesters
$4000 stipend for 8 semesters ($8000 a year)
$1500 for on campus housing for 8 semester ($3000 a year)
Cost of Attendance $28,360.00 per year
Tuition*:
$12,528.00
Room and Meals:
$11,112.00
Books:
$1,200.00
Transport:
$1,480.00
Personal:
$2,040.00
$28,360 - $12,528 because tuition is covered brings it down to $15,832
$15,832 - $11,000 = $4,832 for books transportation and personal spending for the year
Personally I know that transportation won’t cost us that much, we’ll drop him off in the fall and he can ride share home on breaks or take AmTrak ($25 each way Austin to Dallas) I just can’t see books being $600 a semester he can rent them or buy used and resell them. I have no clue haw they figured “personal” spending. I plan to stock him up with toiletries and snacks when we drop him off and replenish at Christmas. His sister is in her second year at college and she spends about $400 - $500 semester on personal stuff.
In reality since parents will be covering transportation and kido will use his personal saving for personal expenses the only reall need is for books. Yes some outside scholarships would be nice but you really don’t need and extra $3K a semester to make it work.
I second what @3scoutsmom says. UTD’s NM scholarship is basically a full ride especially in your Sophomore and up. My DD is receiving $11,000 for living and is paying $615/mo for 9 months for rent in UV. So about half of the stipend is being spent on rent leaving the other half for food and books. She is living in the cheapest apartment setup - 4 bedroom and 2 bath, but it is fine.
