I ask this regarding 529 plans and reimbursement for tech expenses. I could not find a policy on this.
I don’t think they require it – there are computer labs in the dorms, and you can borrow them from libraries. Still, almost everyone my kid knows has their own laptop.
Nope, UW-Madison does not require a personal computer.
But that rule changed effective 1/1/2015. See IRS Publication 970, Chapter 8. A computer, software, internet service can be paid for with 529 plan funds if to be used primarily by the beneficiary during any of the years enrolled.
It doesn’t have to be required by the institution.
