Does visiting a college help you show more interest in the university?

I have been studying in India ( born in America, US citizen) from 7th grade. I am a rising senior who will apply to Brown (Early Decision) for the PLME program.

Would it help increase my chances of admittance if I go especially to vist the university?

When would it be advisable, AFTER Nov. 1st (deadline) or BEFORE?

How would the admission committee know that I am a applicant ( is there a student ID or code?) ?

Who would I get to talk to?

Thank you! :)

Just noticed the title should have ‘university’ instead of ‘college’. My bad.

Brown does not give consideration to a student’s “demonstrated interest” such as a campus visit. Save your money.

Schools that have a more difficult time attracting great applicants will give more consideration. Brown and other top schools don’t have to worry about that so no weight is given.

^ seconded. not really worth it. I was in the same exact situation and didnt do it.

You’d be going on a general tour given by a current UG student. B doesn’t give on campus interviews, you wouldn’t talk to any admissions staff and they’d never know you were there because they don’t take down names.

PLME is more competitive than general admission to B, neither care about showing interest.

I called Brown. They said they take down our names. They make us fill out a form that becomes a record when we actually apply.

They said that they DO make a note of it in our application. They even went so far as to say, “If you get rejected before you visit, the application will be reviewed” Complete BS.

I do not know how evidenced this is. Maybe only business minded motives.

Of course they’d say that.

Save your money. If you’re good enough, you’ll get in regardless of if you went on a campus tour or not.

My D was a Brown applicant last year. On the campus visit they told everyone that there were no forms to fill out because they do NOT record who comes to visit. This was the only school that we visited where this was the case. Demonstrated interest does not matter to Brown. If you are applying ED they know that they are your first choice.

So, logicially, many other universities DO take record of the visits? I called Northwestern and they said the same thing as Brown; They do take notes of the visit and it has a positive effect on you application, albeit with less importance.

Could you name a few other schools that do take record of visits for prospective applicants?

Thank you! :)

Your question about interest is asked frequently, here is one extensive discussion:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/944214-schools-care-about-demonstrated-interest.html?highlight=interest</a></p>

If one is applying early decision, wouldn’t that prove demonstrated interest? I’m so interested in your school that if you take me I will definitely enroll.

nitcomp,
We ended up visiting almost 20 schools and all of them had my daughter fill out a form to note the visit except for Brown.
We visited most of the top liberal arts colleges in the northeast, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, UPenn, etc.
I am surprised that Brown told you that they keep track of their visitors. This must be a new policy instituted this year.

I’m going to deviate and make mention of one thing: you’re international and you’re applying ED. Have you visited Brown, period? Even if demonstrated interest doesn’t factor into admissions, you should visit Brown if you plan on applying ED.
