is it more difficult to be accepted into one major than another? thanks in advance

The fact that most people change their prospective majors in college tells me no, they wouldn’t weight it too much. On the other hand, an appealing candidate in a less popular field may have an advantage over a similarly appealing candidate in a more popular major. So, I’d say it holds little importance, but probably some nevertheless.

My hunch is they ask you to see if your goals somehow align with your interests/classes/ECs.

When you apply to Chicago, you are applying to “The College”, which hosts all majors available to undergraduates- some schools make you apply to a specific school or program upfront, but since all of our majors are contained in the College this is not something that happens at UChicago. While some programs (Law, Letters and Society or Fundamentals: Issues and Texts) require an application once you are already a student in your first or second year, the majority of programs do not, and all entering students have the opportunity to join any major provided they complete the requirements of that major. So, on you application, feel free to say the major or majors you are thinking about- we know (or assume, as it is the case with most students) this will change, and it won’t have any effect on your ability to do any of them or a completely different major if you are accepted.
