I was accepted RD a few days ago, and Williams is one of my top choices right now. I really want to go to Williams Previews, but I really don't know if my family can afford the airline tickets right now. Amherst, Northwestern, and Pomona all offered to pay for flight costs, so I was wondering if Williams has something similar for low-income students. Should I call and ask? Or has anyone received a similar offer in their financial aid package? Thanks.

You should definitely call and ask (mention that the other schools are paying). I bet Williams will do this.

I asked and they said no. It can't hurt to try though. I know that they offer to fly certain URMs out, but if they haven't already offered, you may be out of luck.

Blah. I need one. Tix cost 700 now to get from LA to Albany

you're kidding! this will be one very expensive college visit for me :(

I'm sure they decide on a case-to-case basis, so it's worth calling.

Alby,
Looks like you can do it for under $400 on Southwest if you get the times to work for you.

They offered to pay for students that they invited to the Multicultural Weekend... I'm pretty sure that these were Early Write Acceptances... It definitely doesn't hurt to call and ask if they'll pay for it... but I doubt they will if they haven't already offered...

Williams is UNBELIEVABLY awesome though if that helps at all. :) The most beautiful place I've ever seen and the nicest dorms, library, and classrooms etc. of any other school I visited... and I've visited about 15.

Thanks for all the advice, guys. I actually called them today, and they told me that they had a limited budget for flight costs and that they had virtually no money left. They were really nice about it though, and they kept telling me how terribly sorry they were.

But who in their right mind would go to a college without visiting? I guess it was their way of saying, "So sorry, but we don't really need you at our college."

Oh well, I got accepted to Stanford today! I guess everything works out for the best.

Congrats!!
:)

dreamsicle--congratulations on your admissions to Stanford. Please understand that if you were admitted to Williams, admissions wants you to come. I would strongly discourage you from making your decision based upon the fact that Williams will not pay to fly you down. If after receiving all of your acceptances Williams is still a top choice, don't give up on it. One of the most helpful things about visiting is the opportunity to speak with numerous current students. You can still do this from California, and if it's something you're interested in, I'm sure that admissions will be helpful in giving you the contact info of students involved in activities that interest you. If admissions does not do this, email me 07ns@williams.edu and I would be more than happy to either talk to you myself or find students who you can talk with. It would be a shame for your decision to be affected by your inability to make it out to Williams.

I wish I were accepted. Sigh

Thanks for all the support, guys!

Haon-- I really appreciate it. Williams is still definitely near the top of my list.

albywalby- I am sure you will be happy wherever you end up. Good luck!

dream, I agree that it would be a ptiy to give up on Williams at this point. If you're going to Amherst maybe you could ask Williams to pay half and try to combine the visit.
