Does anyone know if Yale is one of those places that basically lines up all the kids from a single school and decides who they will take (if anyone!), or do they look at all applicants individually, without regard to classmates?

It's all arcane. I doubt there's any quota per school. My local HS (Troy, MI) had four accepts last year (crzy!). They want the best possible combination and aren't held to any constraints

From what our HS counselor told me, no, not really. They actually "line up" kids from a specific region. They compare you and your HS classmates with the other local HS in your area. The regional admissions officers have a lot to say about who gets into the final round. While I don't think they say," we can only take 3 from this school, and 2 from that," they may have a target # for the whole regional pool.

I don't think there's a quota. Yale accepted 17 students from our HS last year. Of course, not everyone who applied got in (apparently the room when the Yale rep visited was overflowing), but that's still a lot of students to make the cut.
