Does your GPA restart when you transfer?

Hello,
I am planning on transferring soon. I was wondering what happens in regards to when you transfer in. Does your GPA continue from what your transferred in with or does it reset when you transfer into the new college? Also, do they tend to keep most of the credits you transfer in with or not? Thanks!

How they want to handle GPA and transfer of credits depends on each college. This information might be on their web sites.

You will have two de facto GPAs, one overall and one from your new college.

If you attend a graduate school, you must send transcripts from every college that you previously attended. They will look at every class and grade, but may or may not combine GPAs from each undergraduate college for admissions evaluation.

Most colleges will calculate GPA for their own purposes only for courses taken at that college.

However, all college courses from all colleges will matter if you subsequently transfer again, or apply to graduate or professional school. For example, law and medical schools will recalculate a college GPA from all of your college courses at all colleges attended.

In terms of transferability of credits, that is up to the new college. The new college may have general policies on its web site; some colleges have articulation listings from common transfer source colleges showing which courses are equivalent. But also, some courses may be accepted for transfer credit but not deemed equivalent to any specific course at the new college.
